Cruise control problems
Has anyone experienced aftermarket cruise control failure? I had the aftermarket control installed two years ago, and the damn thing just stopped engaging. Every once in awhile it'll engage, but then just as suddenly, it'll stop working.
Has anyone else run into this/any idea what the problem might be?
Thanks for any input!

When we bought the xA, the dealer installed the cruise. It seemed odd in function, as when set, it dropped a few MPH before catching. I just thought it was the way it worked, but when I got my xB, it came with cruise from the port and it works fine. I know this is different somewhat from the aftermarket, but it does seem to be a prob maybe related to the install at the dealer....

Dave is right those crimp connectors are bad for not lasting long. Also, if it uses vacuum check for leaks. You didn't mention what kit was used. If it's the toyota one they may cover it undr warranty. If not get the toyota one. My toyota cruise is still working great for almost 2 years and 24K miles.

(Just for accuracy: There is NOT a Toyota/Scion cruise control for the xA/xB series - the IMPORTER, not Toyota, in some parts of the country, list the aftermarket Rostra brand cruise control as a port/dealer option. In other regions that port or dealer installed cruise control is not covered under warranty by Scion or the dealers. The cruise control, in the region (mostly the SE US) where it is listed as an 'option' on new xAs and xBs, is the same one whether installed at port or dealership.)
It sounds like there are two problems - an adjustment problem (the speed drop when engaged) and a poor connection problem (dropping out). Checking the mechanical linkage and all electrical connections for the cruise control sounds like what is needed.
(Here is the installation manual - it will show where the connections are - or at least SHOULD be - and how it should be installed and adjusted: http://tijil.org/0001679910xAxBCruise.pdf)
Hope that helps.

It was an option listed on my sticker. I don't care who makes it. I got no paperwork with it telling me it's not oem so like I said. If my cruise goes sour they WILL cover it under the Scion warranty or else. Parts and Labor period.
Otherwise I would have just bought the kit and installed it myself.

As long as you go in for service in your region, your Rostra cruise control will be covered 'as if it were factory.' In other regions across the country, you might not be so lucky...

I think the slack adjustment at the throttle body has a lot to do with how fast it engages. Mine had no slack and engaged very quickly. I adjusted a little more slack into it, and it engages a little slower now, probably because the servo has a little more pulling on the TB to engage.

Update:I checked the cable. There was a huge amount of slack.Book says .08-.10 I would guess it had a nearly .75 It makes sense that it was "catching up" to the throttle stop.Sloppy install.I will drive it later but I am sure this will fix it.Thanks
Update part deux: Just drove the car and the cruise worked perfect! Thanks a million for the suggestion of adjusting the slack!

Makes me feel good to see problems taken care of so simply and easily by everyone sharing the bits and pieces they have of the puzzle.
That's exactly the way this place is supposed to work.:D
Have a great day, everyone!

Thank You Tomas!
We'll have to get the xA seen about by the dealer. Had already planned to at the first service, but I find it's better to tell them what to fix, rather than asking what might be wrong.
