Default Dangerous??? - Pebble Hit Front Window, Left Exterior Crack

A pebble hit the front window of my xB & left a small crack about half a centimeter, or quarter of an inch. The window glass seems to be multi-layered; therefore, there is no air passing through or anything. The crack is only on the outside.

Is this dangerous? Do I have to get an immediate window glass replacement?

Please help! Thank you!

I had the same thing happen about 2 years ago. A rock hit my windshield and gave it a spider crack about that size. I just used a $10 windshield repair kit to prevent it from getting any bigger. It also helped to reduce the visibility of the crack, and made it less noticeable. So far, so good.

Grant314, thank u for your reply. I will try Permatex. Glad to know that the crack isn't dangerous.

If you have trouble fixing it yourself, places like Safelite Auto Glass can seal it for less than $40. It will prevent the crack from spreading. I have had this done a number of times and the cracks haven't spread even in cold Montana winters with the defroster running.

Thanks.

Wierd, all 3 of my cracks spread in a matter of a day or two, each is well over 16" long. But i still run it ghetto style.

The same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago, with a small pebble aswell!
Sure enough, every cold and warm day that went by, the crack moved about 1 inch everyday. Eventually it stopped, after another 8-10 inches! So ya, it's gonna get bigger...

Lol, my windshield is riddled with chips, not a single one ever expanded on me. I have had a chips since a little after owning the box, so some have been there almost 4 years. Still on my original windshield. If you look at my windshield it looks dirty, but it just has hundreds or chips, lol. I now have a crack in the windshield, but that is because I punched it, oops.

Your glass isnt multi-layered, its covered on both side by a thing layer of plastic/vinyl.

Check your insurance policy, as lots of writers are now offering glass replacement. Mine is free and unlimited.

Get a glass repair kit from your auto supply store. I used a low speed drill to clean my first chip prior to using the resin. If you aren't looking for the chip, you can't tell it's there. Cost me about $7 to fix it.

What do you guys do if you window has what looks like an abrasion?
No crack but looks terrible and is distracting when you drive.
Is there something that can be used for abrasions?

Like someone took some 60 grit sand paper to your windshield? If that is the case, i would just replace it. The protective coating is probably shot, or will be if you try and buff the abrasion out. Glass is cheap enough now that its really not that big of a deal if you need to replace it. Like i metioned above, check with your insurance and see if you have glass coverage. I didnt know i had it until i asked a couple years back.

BTW ... when i say cheap i say that based off the fact that when the xB was first introduced here to the states and later to the East it was $600 easy for front glass. Now its a 1/3rd that price at Safelite.

Thanks, I am not quite at that point yet.

I remember a guy on SL had a clear JDM windshield.

Coolness, I think. UV?

Do you know what I am talking about? This was a while back too.

I would suggest calling your insurance company. Most of the time they will pay the cost to have it repaired. If not call safelite auto glass. It is better to have a profesional do the work. At most it will cost you about $40 and they should still offer a lifetime warranty on the repair ( I used to work for them).

Also safelite will come to were ever you are. So you can call and set up an appoitment to have them come to your work or home.

Just safer that way. Cause if you screw up the DIY kit it will cost you more in the long run.

JUst my $.02

ive had multiple dings in my original windshield that never got worst, especially in the changes in temp that philly has. winter from 0 degrees to 40 everyday, and summers hot and humid around 100. it took me hitting them with pliers to finally do enough damage to have it replaces.....
