As the title states... does it? I know the tC does.

Yes it does have one. Almost every car made has one, even the uber cheap kia's do.

My understanding is that we do have black boxes, but they are only triggered to record data in the event of a crash involving airbag deployment. I could say more, but I will just say: RTFOM!

Yeah, that's they way most work, from my understanding, and I did not see anything about it in the FOM.

It's not in the owners manual and probably won't until the law passes in either 08 or 11 stating they have to advise the purchaser of its presence.

I read it in my owners manual the other day when I was looking for the steps to turn of the Maintance light. I think it is near the front.

I just looked through my electronic version and did not see anything. If you could let me know a page number, I could post a copy of that info.

Page 'iv' in the very front. 2005 owners manual. Your results will be very similar. Doesn't anyone read this stuff?!

The "New Vehicle Warranty" and "your responsibility for maintenance" sections appear verbatum, hyphens and all, on the right half of page 'v' in the 2005 xB owners manual. Look for the section that is headlined "Event data recorder" just before that. Or they just moved it in the 006 manual. The left half of page 'v' in the 005 manual is the continuation of the EDR section that begins on page 'iv'.
...and the left column on your page 'v' is the same as the left column on page 'iv' in the 005 manual.
This would indicate the 2 missing columns, hence the page discrepancy.
So has the EDR info been moved, altered (specs), or suppressed? You tell us. I only have a 005 maual, 'cause that's what I bought.
Good luck, young Skywalker, and May The Force Be With You! ( 'cause I don't trust this s#!T either! )

I also have a 2005 manual, and the digital version I posted is EXACTLY what appears on page iv of my manual. I do have a VERY early 2005, though. Thumbing through both the paper manual and my digital version yields no sections that start with "Event Data Recorder" Searching yields nothing either.

OK I found it, but this was in a document which was definitely not in the owners manual I have. It was hidden away in some techinfo stuff about the airbag.

That's another section. Not close to what's printed on the last half of page (iv) & the first half of page (v) in my manual.
It's kind of a paraphrase, though. Worthy of note is apparently the data is lost in the event of another 'event', or the battery deing disconnected...
Glad it's not recording my voice if I'm in a wreck, I'd hate to have my mother hear me talking like that 'in court'!

My printed FOM for the 2006 xB has a statement similar to Tomas' electronic version.

"It's in there..."

If the VSC EDR is seperate and records steering wheel position, mine has every position possible recorded. When I trigger these systems, it's not 'cause I'm going in a straight line! But seriously, with all the big brother connotations, the systems are there to help us and others as well. If we drive responsibly we have nothing to worry about. If we don't there's always disconnecting the battery...

That's the 'official' Toyota electronic copy of the 2006 xB FOM with an 'effective date' of 20MAY2005 for those pages, 1anonymous1 and peteski.

Different print dates may have slightly different info...

Thanks Tomas.

1anonymous1: the EDR does not keep a record of your daily drives. It only takes a snapshot of all those parameters in a crash or near-crash condition. I assume when airbag deploys.

So, there is no need to didconnect the battery to clear out anything. Besides I'm sure that this snapshot is stored either on an EEPROM or it has internal baterry backup. Many tiimes when you crash, battery gets smashed and wiring shorted out. So, in those most important cases VSC would be useless if it depended on the car battery. It has to permanently record the data somehow.
