Default Fillup problems

I thought it was just my xB but I often have trouble filling up the gas tank. Most of the time it will fill up all but the last few gallons and click off. Then the last 2-3 gallons I have to fill it slowly.

That's not too bad. Though sometimes I can only fill it slowly for the whole tank...and one time the bloody nozzle kept clicking off ever two seconds no matter how little I squeezed the handle.

I found out last night that my friend has a similar problem with his xB though not as bad.

I bought the car used and out of warranty so I have no history.

Any one else have this problem or have ideas what is wrong?

Is it just at the one gas station? Sometimes the pumps seem to have a lot of pressure and will cut off if you open it all the way. But I haven't noticed this happening any more with my xB than any other car I've had.

Yes...this happens quite a bit. I think there was a thread about this a long time ago. One suggestion, which works pretty well, was to turn the nozzle upside down when filling. Give that a shot.

^^^x2 The station I stop at shuts off from the back pressure in the hose too, But I noticed it is when they aren't very busy and just one or two pumps going...I wouldn't worry too much.

It's something with the gas tank. I checked the warranty info about it on AllData (vehicle repair database), and it's something with xA's and xB's. Just go to the dealership, and you should be able to get it fixed under warranty.

Read this, your problem may be taken care of by a TSB:

I have to do the same thing, turn the gas nozzle upside down, like a NASCAR fueler, and no problem.

So the TSB is
EG049-04 FUEL NOZZLE CLICKS OFF BEFORE TANK IS FULL
11/19/2004 - 2004, 2005 Scion xA & xB. Some customers with 2004 – 2005 model year Scion xA and xB vehicles may experience difficulty adding fuel to their vehicles. An improved fuel tank and fuel tank filler inlet pipe have been developed to correct this condition.

And my car is well past the warranty.

A fuel tank filler inlet pipe is one thing, probably not too expensive, but the fuel tank is quite another and probably pretty pricey. Anyone got it priced out? Parts/labor?

Maybe I'll search the junkyards for a 2006 xB and get the tank from it.

Or maybe just try flipping the nozzle.

I had mine replaced under warranty, but I looked up the prices... over a grand in parts.

Ouch, does it list the part names and numbers by chance? I'd like to look them up so that if I go to the junk yard I can get them pulled easily.

Of course you didn't have any problem. This is just with '04 and '05.

But yea, I didn't start having that problem until I started going to AM/PM to fill up, and that wasn't until sometime after my warranty crapped out on me.

Thanks much...the tank sub-assembly is probably the priciest. Shouldn't be too difficult to swap out though. Maybe an afternoon's worth of work.

Mine does it too so I fill it slowly on the first notch. Most pumps have way too much pressure so the splash from trying to fill too quickly often triggers the shut off. I just deal with it rather than have some tech F' with my box.

I would just ask the dealer.
A TSB tells how to correct a problem.
Problems are corrected for free during the various warranty periods.
Problems that are recalls are corrected for free after the warranties.
If the fuel filler problem was not a recall, they might not fix it after the warranty.
But maybe it is a silent recall, one of those problems they fix only if you ask.
Surely the TSB would not list $1000 worth of parts, plus labor, and expect the owner to pay to fix a fuel system design defect.

some xBs have left the factory with a bent filler neck (silent recall) check with a dealer it may be fixed for free, if thats the problem. I had the problem to i just run the low pump speed and it will fill the whole tank. And dont shove the nozel all the way in have it back a bit it helps.
