Flooded My Engine... To Sell or Not To Sell
#21
Well you know how high the engine sits. I think my intake sucked it up (I have an aftermarket one). I'm not sure how it didn't get in anywhere else.
My car's been ready since Wednesday, but the check hasn't yet come in the mail from Geico!!!! I'm dying here. Hoping to get it in today's mail.
So I have no idea how it smells. Hopefully it doesn't...
Street: the dealership's replacing the entire engine w/a used one (it cost $1400, not $450)

Got my baby back!! I still hadn't received the check in the mail, but the adjuster talked to the dealership and asked if he could just pay them on Monday. They agreed, so I paid my deductible and got her back. I'm soooo happy!!
First off, it looks like nothing even happened to it. It looks great. The interior smelled like my air freshener; there wasn't a bit of moisture on the carpet all.
Driving it feels a little different. It seems a lot louder and slower. It definitely seems to drive perfectly though. I didn't notice anything w/the bearings/wheels, etc. The adjuster said that since it was fresh water, I most likely didn't have any problem with them. Especially because it rains all the time on our cars.
I did ask him about any future issues that may arise. He said to just arrange it between the dealership and himself and they would take care of it.
So far so good, but I've only driven it from the dealership to my house. I'll let you all know how things go. Thanks for all of your input!! I honestly think this happened to tell me to stay in my car. I kept contemplating whether or not I should sell it and get something else; but obviously I have no choice now but to keep it. It takes a lot of pressure off of me!!

I still can't understand why anyone would want to get rid of their box. I'm hardcore to the bone I guess.
Congrats on getting it back. It may take awhile for the ECU to re learn how you drive. That is why it's running different.

you should have posted on here before you had it taken to the dealership to get it fixed...im sure the overall opinion would have been to have it totaled....even if the insurance wouldnt want to you could have got a lawyer and made them total it....you have got a car that is at least worth only half of what it was before...and hopefully a car fax on your car will show where the engine was replaced, so any smart buyer in the future will steer clear of it.

Unfortunately I don't have the funds or time to go through arbitration, etc. And to be perfectly honest, I would have been crushed if they totaled it because I love it so much.
Do you guys think it's possible that I would need my brakes redone after the water? My passenger side is making that whistling sound when I hit my brakes and it wasn't doing that before the flood.
bB2NER, I looooove my box. I was really upset about this whole thing because that is my baby!! I had an xB before this one too and I plan on getting another one when it's time to replace this one. I am definitely a hard core scion fan. I just really didn't know what to do in a situation like this.
Things that are different: I have noticed that it doesn't start up as fast as it used to. I have to hold the key at the start position for awhile longer for it to turn over. It's not like chugging or anything, but it takes longer.
Also, I think the idle is really low because it seems to take more of the gas peddle after shifting to get it to move forward. I noticed that I can almost stall it if I'm not careful or paying attn. Is there any way to adjust the idle on these cars? I think I just need to raise it a little bit.
Other than that, she's louder and slower. Is that because the ECU needs to be retrained like you said bB?

Yes, you can adjust the idel, there is an allen head bolt on the throttle body, but i would suggest you do not do that yourself.
The starting issue, i would say first that would be the battery. You may have gotton a second hand battery from the shop. If not the battery, then it may be the plugs.
You may want to pull the fuse and both battery cables over night. Install them both the next morning and then drive the box like you stole it. Keep that up for a few days and see if you cant re-program the ECU to your aggressive driving habits.

Which fuse are you talking about?
Also, wouldn't they have changed the plugs when they dropped the new engine in it? I was thinking it could be the spark plugs but figured they must have changed them. Then again, they didn't charge me for that so they may not have.
I'm wondering if I should bring it to my mechanic friend and have him do a once over to see what else needs to get fixed. I don't want to wait too long before bringing it up to the adjuster.
