Default I am TICK-TICK-TICKed . . .

What is ticking me is Stubby, my '06 xB with a stick.

Just recently my wife noticed that there's a quiet tick-tick-ticking sound coming from Stubby somewhere (I wouldn't have noticed, but she has superior hearing and I nearly always have tunes cranked ;^)

It only happens when the clutch is engaged, the ticking is at engine speed, and it doesn't matter if the transmission is in neutral or in gear. I think it happens in gears other than first, but I can't be entirely sure because of road noise. But *very* slight pressure on the clutch pedal -- not even enough to start disengaging the clutch -- makes the sound go away until the pedal pressure is removed, when the sound comes back.

To make things worse, it's intermittent. Sometimes it won't happen at all for days, other times it's almost every time the car is driven. It also seems to happen more often when the car is fully warmed up, but that isn't certain because of the intermittent nature of the problem.

The car has just under 24K miles and drives perfectly in every other way. We've both driven sticks on several other vehicles for many years, so I doubt we've abused the clutch in any way.

Anyone have any clues of what might be going on? How to fix it? Just something we have to live with?

Thanx for any help!

dam that sucks i had a squicky problem and narrowed it down to the rubber boot on the hydro cylinder ..i press the clutch and the boot would move thus making a noise mine also did the same were one day it would be bad other days nothing..when it does make the noise try and get some one out side to try and narrow it down...the only other thing that would make a noise would be if the axles are busted but you have such low miles..does it do it while turning??? check out the cv boots and looks around for anythong looking out of place...maybe check the fluid level ?just thougth id throw out some ideas ya know keep us updated on what the problem is ..

Isn't your car still under warranty (drivetrain)?? If not just live with it until it gets worse. Good luck.

I am pretty sure that I have the same problem. I am not the most mechanically inclined, but when I described the problem to a guy I know who is a tech, he say it is probably the vacuum schecking valve. He told me it doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong, that sometimes different cars just do that. It is also more noticable if you ave an intake on it. Don't know if this helps, but maybe it gives you a something to check into.

It may just be one of those noises that stick xBs make.

...sounds to me like the Throw-Out Bearing may be the culprit. If you're under warranty, it might be a good idea to have the dealership look at it. If the TOB ever sticks, you could be in a world of problems.

Thanx for the feedback, folks; this group ROCKS. It is under warranty still, and I'm thinking I'll probably have someone at the local dealership have a listen and give me an opinion on what, if anything, I should do about it. I only hope it will tick-tick-tick when I bring it in.

(I'm also thinking of calling Car Talk to see if I can get on the show and be laughed at ;^)

The car talk guys (click and clack) always make fun of Scion owners.
