Default Interior/Hatch Dimensions...Bikes?

I apologize if this has already been answered - I did try searching. I currently have an Xa, and am contemplating purchasing an '04 Xb. It would only be worth it to me if I can fit bikes through the rear hatch with just the front wheel off. The problem is - I'm tall and have big bikes. I think I need a height of 46" to slide the bikes through the rear hatch - sans front wheel.

Can anyone tell me the height of the rear hatch opening? I would appreciate it!

Why not just get a rack?

I've got an 06 xB and I ride a 58 cm road frame. When I ride with a friend I can prop two bikes in the back at an angle (leaning against the sides) with their forks crossing a bit. There's plenty of room behind the front seats for gear and the hatch closes fine. You might have to move the front seats up a notch or two, but there is no need to jam the seat all the way forward. Bungee the top tube or seat to the rear handhold and the bikes won't settle. You should be set and the bikes secure for a post ride latte without having to worry about leaving them on a rack.

Cheers,

MD

Unfortunately, I have a 63 cm frame. I just measured one at lunch - it looks to be about 40" - a tad too short.

"Why not just get a rack?" - because my bike is worth more than the Xb it would be riding in
