Wow, that's pretty impressive then. I'll highly consider going to a synthetic in my tranny soon.

I drove over 52k miles in a little over a year, and I've never gotten above 30mpg...auto tranny, Mobil1 engine oil. The rpm's are too high under typical highway driving...unless you're going 55....

You may want to change the tranny fluid to something better.

My last tank was not too great because of a month of 1 mile trips several a day cold starts with 5 or 6 stop signs in that 1 mile too. But driving back from getting 10.025 gallons of gas after 388 miles on Sunday I drove about 35 miles and got 50.4mpg mostly country roads 30-45 mph and a little on the highway getting back to Newport.

Just curious. What did you get on the tank with the 1 mile trips and 5-6 stop signs?

OK, Jan06xB, with you as my inspiration I put ~60 miles on my xB on the back roads at about 50MPH. A few stops in that for the small towns. MPG was 40.1!

Not that I will ever drive that slow on a long trip, but it does prove that high MPG is very possible... even with an automatic.

Just got my scangauge II today. Now I know how much fun the Prius owners have trying to maximize their mpg.

Looks like about 38.8mpg right 388 miles on 10.025 gallons plus or minus a gas pump click or two - it stopped pumping the first time at about 9.1 gallons and I just keep letting a little more gas in and then stop for it to drain down the filler pipe then give it a little more and stop to get almost another gallon into the tank so I really did fill it up and the low gas light was not on yet so it was probably a bit of pump error because in the past it took almost exactly 10 gallons to fill when the low gas light came on with it spilling on the ground and not going down any more. The Scangauge said I had used 9.9 gallons to go that 388 miles so the 0.1 gallon resolution is within the accuracy of the ScanGauge and pumping errors. Some of that tank was Christmas day driving which brought up the average but this was a LOW tank of gas for sure mileage wise. On one track upload from the gps there were 16 1-2 mile trips and maybe a 20 mile trip over the course of a few days.

YUP you got it and then if you add a few friction reducers to the lubes and kept it to about 40mph max you could do even better.

My mileage was up and down at first...has gone up a little since I hit 6000 miles. I have never really worried too much about getting 40 mpg. It just sure beats the heck out of the 10-15 mpg i was getting in my F150 and a whole lot Cooler..lol

Yeah this is true those F150s really know how to burn gas - friend has one and it is good for about 17 highway - he could get more if he would stop driving 70+ all the time. I used to drive a 50mpg+ car so the 32mpg with almost the same size tank was a bit of an adjustment . . . 1/4 tank used to get me about 150 miles now it is more like 60 to 100 miles plus the gas prices jumped up at the same time. That's why I started working on improving the mileage on the xB.
