poor gas mileage?
#62
So, which refinery is making the low-quality stuff? Not every gas station company has their own refinery, there's only 3-4 refining companies here in our area, but a dozen brands of gas stations... It may be different in CO, but in CA they've had to replace all the tanks at stations to prevent leaking into the groundwater (actually a scheme to chase all the independent stations out of business, but that's another issue) so even getting "bad gas" out of a tank is fairly slim.
Refineries also have standards they have to meet.

poor gas mileage test completed...
The other day in my post, I stated that I had just awoke to the fact that I was not
getting decent gas mileage......I had driven 45miles that took 2.5 gallons of gas,
that really sucks!! So, I decided to do a controlled test. (My xB has the CAI, Borla
Cat-Back Dual Exhaust, Hyper-Voltage System, and Denso-Iridium plugs, all of
which should improve my mileage, not take away.) The above test if you do the
math came to a pathetic 18mpg all city driving!
I just finished my controlled test where I consciously drove my xB in a "normal",
adult-style....meaning that I accellerated normally without using any more than 1/2
throttle to get up to speed, I just drove it average. I drove 25 city miles and 20
highway miles(65mph), then filled the gas tank. I took 1.468 gal. which comes to
just about 31mpg combined average.....I can live with that! (By the way, where I
live is 5200 feet above sea level which probably affects mileage also.)
It demonstrates, that with our xB's and their lack of aerodynamics, that your
mileage will depend HEAVILY on your style of driving.
Hope this gives you some useful info....

Weight makes a difference too, I try to keep mine as light as possible. I stayed with 14 inch rims to save weight, since going bigger just adds it. No sub boxes or extra stereo stuff. It all adds up very quick, and it all sucks down the gas.

actually I have been AWESOME mileage! I just got done with a tank of gas, which was mostly in town driving and Ive noticed in town I get much better then on highway.
I usually travel between 70-80 on highway and in town 40-50.
the most recent tank I went 293 miles filled up tank with only 8.5 gallons, that comes out to 34.4 MPG!
My recent tank was mostly highway miles and I did 31.5 MPG with that tank.
This is in Phoenix, AZ and not using AC.
So, Im pretty happy, wonder what it will be like in summer with AC LOL!

who is to say that when they are testing the car they don't top it off? This could one reason why some of you don't get as many miles out of your car. For example, my friend always locks the handle so that he does not have to hold the nossle. When it stops is when he quits and puts the nossle back. Me on the other hand, I always put more in it after it stops. usually about $1.50+. That is about 20 miles more. However I don't think that when they do mpg testing, they fill up the tank. They put a gallon of gas and run it until it stops. They'll do this several hundred times, average the score and that is the mpg.

On that topic, it is really bad to top off your tank. There is a charcoal canister to absorb fumes put off from the gas and when you top your tank off you run the risk of saturating this with gas and killing its effectiveness. Also you risk spilling gasoline, which is both wasteful and harmful to the environment. Unburned fuel in the air is one of the MAJOR causes of pollution, don't add to it. When the handle kicks off, stop pumping

Mileage
My first tank was under 30. My next was 33, last night was 34 mpg. I commute 110 miles a day. From reading this forum prior to getting my XB, I was concerned about mileage. The XB is getting the same mileage now as my 04 Nissan Sentra on my commute.
I really like my box...

Before the cannisters were installed and the raw fuel system sealed it was not at all unusual to see cars at roadside stops (like restaurants next to gas stations) sitting there with pools of gas under them as the topped-off tank's contents warmed in the sun while the driver ate.
It really is best not to top off, especially if you are not going to be sucking an adequate amount of fuel out of the tank immediately to prevent expansion problems.

My Boxx Is Tite!
I have Been keeping pretty good track of my mpg since I got my boxx in October. I drive about 70% highway and 39% city (just kidding 30%, LOL). I have stock tires and no performance mods. I drive about 85 miles a day and as of yesterday I had 13,600 miles and an overall average 31.14 mpg (used 435 gallons of gas and drove 13,540 miles). Over the last three weeks it has started to warm up in Chicago and I am averaging about 33mpg. I had a Jeep Cherokee before this and got about 17mpg, so I ain't complaining.
I'm sorry y'all, but I ALWAYS top my tank off. I can't help myself! It is just impossible to walk away from the pump with a $12.77 bill when I can make it a clean $13. I'm a sick, sick individual!

34MPG today @$2.11 for regular. Yesterday was $2.24 at the same station...Hmm.
I've been wondering. When I fill the tank past the last ticker on the fuel gauge (putting ~8-9gals) my MPG drops to 30 or less. But if I fill it before the last ticker, a bit lower than mid-point, my average is around 32. Not much of a difference. Same driving style. I wonder if the box sucks more fuel once the tank is closer to empty.

My first fillup at 179 miles I averaged 22mpg, the second fillup I averaged 17mpg. I have 17" wheels on my car, and know it has something to do with it, but it really shouldn't be this bad! I have like 340 miles on it now.

unacceptable mileage
I'm not surprised others are disappointed as well. There will probably be a class action lawsuit to compensate owners for this deception. If you haven't noticed the window stickers, they claim 34 highway. I consistently get between 23 and 27mph on the highway.
This weekend I drove quite a few miles, from San Jose to Sacramento, then to Antioch and back to San JOse. On the first tank, I got 23.4mpg.
Granted, it was hot, I drove 70-75 with the AC on, I had about 350 pounds of people in the car, and had my gorge racks on the top with 2 windsurf boards and a quiver bag. With all my previous cars (nissan sentra, ford escort gt, vw passat glx, mustang gt, subaru legacy gt, cutlass supreme) driving with the boards and extra people never caused more than 2-3mpg drop. And running AC shouldn't cause a drop more than 2mpg. So a 10.6 drop indicates a real problem.
The second tank gave me 26.4mpg, still not near the rated numbers.
FYI, I've NEVER gotten up to 300 miles on a tank in my xB. This is the only car I've ever driven that couldn't go 300 miles.

Sue the government, not the car makers. The "claims" are displayed on the car by government mandate, and are the result of government-mandated testing methods.
That said, your expectations appear to be extreme. Try driving 300 miles at 55mph on a level road. The car should be as delivered, with only the driver on board. Now you'll have come within shouting distance of the EPA methodology, and you'll undoubtedly get similar results.
If you're going to complain about what it says on the EPA sticker, read everyting on the sticker, including the disclaimers.
(I got 28mpg in mixed driving on my second tank. I expect that to improve.)
