Hey IB--Picked up my Blue Box last Friday. Had a full tank and 19 miles on the ODO: someone went to Sonic for lunch

Down to almost a quarter tank this morning and 260 miles driven so far. Going to track gas mileage the first few tanks closely. Mine is a manual and driving mix is about 60 city/40 highway so far.

 

I normally get about 33 out of mine. If I drive it hard or run the AC it will fall about 2 mpg. I've never fallen below 30 mpg and have gotten as good as 37 out of it. It all depends on how I drive it.

05 Xb - 5 speed
3200 miles
Mostly highway driven at 75 - 80 mph.
K&N filter installed, air tube removed. Otherwise 100% stock.

 

 

I have been getting about 26mpg or 244-250 per fillup at about 9.5 gallons per fill up. I only have 1800 miles on her so I hope it will improve. It has been REALLY hot so the AC is being used a ton. I think Im on the low side though. I wish it was up about 30.....

 

All i know is that driving to new york ...476 to 81 to 17 and then pretty much and exit off of 17 ...i got 296 miles on my tC and I still have a 1/4th of a tank to go so we drove it down a little bit more and i still got another 30-50 miles onto it and it was still almost at a 1/4th tank it was just starting to go below it ...so i pretty much think if your driving straight freeways 65+ you get amazing gas mileage especially if you have the 06's because they redid the gear ratios, at 87 mph im on 4k rpms ...i hit 5k rpms around 100 mph ...the car sounds secksi going that fast lol but it seems gas mileage is really effected on about every single road condition possible you will never get what they say you will get because they drive them to the ground on a flat smooth track ... pretty much controlled conditions so its not worth believing it

 

Until you break the motor in, your milage is going to blow chunks.

I just thought I'd point that out since I doubt you read all 6 pages where it's been
mentioned once or twice.

After your first 1000 miles, stock xB should get around 30-33MPG with mixed
driving. That's what I got, and reading through this thread, that seems to be what
the "average" driver gets.

After mods, it varies. Both because of the mods, and because of the excitement of
new mods me thinks.

I keep super detailed logs of my milage. How detailed? I can tell you what time it
was, what Shell station I was at, and what pump on EVERY fill up I've done.

 

i've been getting 27-28mpg avg because i drive 85% in the city. i went to San Diego from Los Angeles for the first time with my xB last Friday and forgot to refill the gas (3/4 tank left). so when i was coming home from San Diego, the light came on with 275miles on the trip meter. after refilling, i calulated whats my mpg. i was surprised that i got nearly 30mpg after all the traffic and all the revving to other drivers that i've been doing, LOL! j/k, some actually...

 

mine is kind of always up and down. kinda disappointing. some times i would get good milage and other times it is horible

From this post though it seems like every box is different.
I know if you add one factor (wind resistance) it will drop the MPG dramatically

This is just from the first tankful. 340 miles and 9.385 gallons to fill it up. Of course it may not register this high on the next few tanks. Going to track it for a while. Running the A/C 75% of the time with the summer heat.

My spirited driving experience takes place on the highway where I have room to roam at 75 with the windows down For city driving I don't roll like a grandma, but not too aggressive with the shifts either.

First week with the box has been GRRREEEAAAATTTTT!

Filled up my first tank today. 10.1 gallons at 306 miles. Fuel light went on around 9.5 gallons left, I estimate ... a little over two gallons short of the tank capacity (11.9 gallons). Pretty good MPG for the first tank.

 

So after a week of driving my xB, I managed to get about 30mpg on my first tank.

Fuel used: 10.10 gals.

well i know i get great gas mileage when i take long highway trips. i got almost 40 going to sacramento and i hit 118 going up and the average speed was 90+

 

Yes, I see much better mileage on road trips than in the city.

 

2-yr old Box (Automatic)

Highest Average MPG = 30.9

Lowest Average MPG = 26.2

I always reset the tripmeter between fill-ups to compute total miles in relation to the amount of Fuel.

90/10 Freeway/City, not more than 75 MPH,consistent at 29-30MPG

Interstate travel where I normally go 80-90 MPH is ALWAYS on the low 26 mpg side.

I don’t have a lead foot and I’m at the slowest lane 70% of the time

First 2 oil changes are Dino oil, After that is just full synthetic 10-30W up to now but I think it did not really help on my quest for better MPG.

This was a problem at first but it got better mileage after 7K miles. I had to try out suggestions from scionworld, scion-owners, scion evolution & scion life from resetting the ECU to experimenting with tire sizes.

I think this is only an issue to the Automatic xB’s

 

hey Flip-FLop. Have you tried the ground wire mod?
On my auto it difinatly made a difference on take off.

My numbers (and xB) are very similar to FlipFlop's

2004, xB, Auto, stock tires, 5W-30 full synthetic oil, TRD free-flow air-filter, ram/cold air intake, 16K miles on odo.

Average: 27 mpg (city/highway mixed driving)
Best ever: 31 mpg (highway road trip)
Worst ever: 25 mpg (winter storm, bigger tires)

Questions:
What are the tricks for...
* resetting the ECU
* ground wire trick
