My Toyota pickup grinds going into reverse and so does my Xb, it must be a Toyota thing.

A lot of cars don't have reverse synchros. . . it just means that you can't shift into reverse if you are moving. In fact, we don't have a 1st gear synchro either. . . some cars (I believe the EVO and Sti) have 1st gear synchros. I have no i dea on getrag trannies.

If I'm rolling slowly to a stop and shift into first it will grind.

That a common misconception. About 80% of people downshift like that with a slowly lurching clutch drag, and thats the wrong way to do it, and just wears the clutch faster.

Ha! You know, maybe you're right. We may not even have one, thus the reason for grining reverse!

Well, My Mazda Pickup is basically a Ford Ranger, and I used to coast into reverse or into first with the clutch in, and then engage it when the rpms seemed right. I guess I was lucky that it worked that way. No grinding.
I'll just have to get used to TOYota tranny. J/K about the TOY part My old Ford loyalties seeping through.

Yeah. . . had a Ranger too. . . first was difficult to engage, as well as reverse. It had the same issues; meaning the truck had to be stopped to engage reverse, as well as first, unless rev matching was utilized.

I try not to drag the clutch...I try to brake with it bc the noise is harsh sometimes.
Is that wrong too??

i had the reverse problem too (ive driven stick for 4 years now and am good).

honestly, the scion xB and xA manuals suck lately. from going out prematurely, not shifting into reverse right, and the various other problems are one thing i dont like. i think scion should know this. i dont know if a recall is in order for any parts, but im just not impressed with them (i dont race or beat on my car at all either before you ask).

If your sychro is bad(from heavy use or abuse), you will need to double clutch when downshifting. . . rev matching alone will not be sufficient.

To properly dbl shift, you need to shift into neutral first, disengage the clutch, rev match, then clutch in and down shift.

Of course you might be doing this already, but I'm just double checking. Some people believe that dlb clutching is not necessary, and that they synchros can do the work. . . which is true to an extent. But we have cheap synchros, and the tranny isn't designed for aggressive shifting. Thus, if you want to keep your synchros in shape (for years to come), you must dbl clutch and rev match (if you drive aggressively or downshift hard).

Believe me. . . I tried the "letting the synchros work" for a while, and I can already hear the wear in my third gear synchro.

But again, I dunno what you are doing in your particular case.

I suck at driving a stick, and so I've started double-clutching... just from the fact that I don't jerk the car anymore, I'm going to keep doing it.

As for shifting into reverse, the reverse gear is not a helical gear but a standard straight type. Getting the gears to physically mesh is more difficult.

^^^^^ 100% correct about the straight cut. . . forgot to mention that.

Recently, I've also noticed the grinding from 3rd to 2nd in my xB when driving fast in twisties, above 3.000rpm +/-. Also, all the gears engage smoother when I double-declutch. Haven't succeeded to do heel-and-toes in the xB yet!

Before the grinding, a Toyota of Roswell technician told me it was just the transmission vibrating and all Toyotas do that but, now with the grinding, I think it was BS and more about the syncro.
Going to check that out at another dealership!

more than likely. . . try double clutching. . . you won't grind anymore.

Default xb dieing

took the box out today in the rain, my tires are a little bald, it was slipping a good bit, took it out the next day, it squeals after 5000 rpm, is that clutch or throw out bearing?
