Default Ran out of gas?

How far have you taken your gas gauge needle without running out a fuel….below "E"?

Post photos of how far you have taken it.

HA! Don't do it! It's bad for the carborator kiddo. My first fill up came within 5 miles of the little yellow dash light shinning forth by the fuel gauage and it was full at 9.5 gallons. So if the tank holds 11.9 there was about 2.5 gallons left to go before I had to start walking.

I dont have a pic but next time I do I'll let you know...I've taken it to the E if not under. Not on purpose but driving to CA alone I dont stop anywhere if I dont know the area so I take it to the limit for safety reasons....yeah thats it.

i go refill when the needle is between the "1/4 tank" and the "E"

i dont want to take any risk/chances...

my friend, on the other hand, he always thought that the "E" stands for 1/8 of the tank left. he ran out of gas 5 times so far...

Yep, but it can be bad for fuel pumps. They are designed to be submerged in fuel and get a certain amount of cooling from the fuel. If the level drops too much the pump can get hot and eventually fail if this is a prolonged routine. Not to mention all the sediment that will eventually collect at the bottom and get sucked up into the filter and clogging it as well.

of all the ways to brag, this has to be one of the more pointless ones. "I could run my car until there was just one drop of gas left! it stalled right when I pulled up to the pump!"

that's grrrrrrrreat. sound of all the applause from people caring......... *crickets chirp*

I think he commented on the carberator. No carb in a fuel injected motor

The low fuel warning light *should* come on between 2 and 2.5 gallons left.

I these cars that means "look for a gas station, but don't panic."

If you still haven't found a gas station 40 or 50 miles after the light has come on, panic.

Running out of fuel, aside from being dumb and dangerous, can damage the fuel system (pump and injectors), but the damage is actually unlikely.

Still, WHY take the chance??? You're going to add fuel, anyway, so why not right about when the light comes on, or even before?

(I've run mine to 'light on' once, just to assure myself it worked - other than that, I usually fill up, when convienient, around 1/4 or 1/3 tank.

My preferred Chevron station is 3 miles from where I live, and when I'm in the lower third of the tank and happen to drive by, I stop in and do it. Saves me a 'special trip' to fuel up, and worrying about how much farther I can make it.

I prefer 'stress free' driving. :D

well i never have had it run out, but the most i have ever put in a fill up was 10.8 gal..... so i guess i didnt have much more to go.... i did a total of around 370miles i believe on that tank. but depending on my plans for my drive, i normally wait for the light before fill up..... if i know i'm going on a trip or some distance, i fill up first.

Usually fill up in warmer months with 1/4 left. In winter, rarely let it get below 1/2!!

Default here are the quantities at fill up

Well, I am not really bragging about how far I got it past “E” nor am I trying to make a competition of it.
Quite frankly, I never fill the tank until after the light comes on. I just don’t like spending time filling the tank more than I have to and I am always trying to find the LOWEST price for fuel thus I am driving further to get the best deal.

Since I have had the xB here are the quantities at fill up
10.76
11.00
11.23
10.72
10.69
10.96
9.71 (my wife filled it)

Default Thank you for your input

And for all those that think this is such a pointless topic...(LVScionGal and HawkWolf)
why waste your time posting a reply if you think so?

The point is…something to talk about (I’ll admit not much) and you added to the conversation.

Thank you for your input

I fill up twice a week. I don't have any more time to spend at the pump. Usually I put about 10 gallons in.

Excellent answer... the pump is cooled and lubricatred by the fuel...

Sorry again for the misunderstanding.

It was 10pm in the middle of no where, when the light came on and i had no clue where i was at. 55miles later there was a gas station.
