Default replacing broken real tail light lens.

I ordered a new lens for my 2005 Xb. I thought it would be easy to replace myself, but I can't figure out how to do it. Do you have to pull the entire rear taillight assembly to do it. I found a link on this site that details how to install LED taillights, but if I just want to replace a broken lens do I have to pull it all apart? I should mention that I am quite mechanically inept- should I just have the dealer do it?

Thanks

If you're not mechanically inclined.... buy a pizza and some beers and invite over a friend who is...

I've had some of the best times ever working on friends' rides, just for the hell of it...

You're gonna have to pull the assembly.

2 10mm (IIRC) bolts.... it pops right out. The lens should snap in pretty easily.

Once you get the assembly out, is it difficult to get the lens out without breaking it? It looks like you have to pry out the little plastic tabs with a screwdriver.

Yea... I did mine without breaking it... plus, you don't have to worry about breaking the old lens (since it's presumably already broken)

The lens goes back in easier than it comes out.

Thanks, burstaneurysm.

Did you replace with a new gasket, or just use the old one?

I used the old one. They're pretty decently watertight.

Wow, I didn't even know the lens was availible by itself. I would have just picked up a used assembly from www.car-part.com .
How much was just the lens jayp?

Damn... 60 bucks.

If you ever need a replacement again, there are usually ones on ebay for cheap. They'd be the full housing too.

I've seen them in the SL classifieds for 60 bucks a pair shipped.

It's ok. Hopefully there won't be a "next" time. I'm just glad you got it fixed and good luck.

For what? You have an xB2. For an xB you can usually get a pair of complete TL assemblies for around 60 bucks here in the classifieds.

Are you looking for a first gen xb or second gen?

If first gen. You can pick up full tail lights cheaper. I got a pair for 40 bucks shipped. If your asking about second gen. They will be harder to come by since their new. Especially for $60.

Yeah, xB2 TLs on ebay go for over 100 bucks regularly.
