Default Spare tire on the hatch: xB

Well, I've waited for cbarsi's response to how he mounted his spare tire on the rear hatch, and havn't heard back. Is there a kit I could purchase that would fit on the back, or would I have to go to a pick-n-pull and make one fit?

I was just thinking about that today. I haven't thought about mounting yet, jus wondering what it would look like.

Has anyone been able to mount the spare under the car yet?

I'm with you...unless someone has a really good pic. And then I'll still think it's a bad idea. If I had to mount the spare outside of the car, I'd just buy a can of Fix-a-flat and/or sign up with AAA.

Default Spare tire on hatch

I just sold my 02 wrangler and I bet you could use the carrier from a wrangler. It attaches to any flat surface and takes 4 bolts .You could also use the jeep bump stop to keep it from rattling and hitting the wiper.Just not sure how much weight the hatch can hold, and thinking of it I would hate opening the hatch everytime with a 30lb wheel and tire on it. Good luck send a pic!

You'd need to seriously consider how the hatch struts funciton. You'd probably end up needing to do two things: install new, stiffer struts and reinforce the areas where they attach..

i don't think it is a good idea bc it might be too heavy for the trunk door....

It would be too heavy. The hatch would not stay up. You may want to consider a swing-away tire rack that has hinges mounted above and below the left rear tailight.

theres some guy on here with a woody kit on his xb with the roof rack, and surfboards on top, and he has his spare mounted on the back.

*when it comes to being on the hatch; i agree w/everyone on the idea of checking the ability of the struts to hold up the hatch ( I KNOW you'll have to get heavier duty ones...) and also maybe consider the way it is attached to the car... those pins are rated to a certain shear strength...

*when it comes to mounting underneath...
ive tried this; because i didnt want to loose my spare becuase of air ride... soo....
the only way you can is to move all those fuel management (?) boxes from the underside...and from what i hear, it's not a walk in the park to make it work afterwords (that green xB w/the cusom air setup from mini truckin i believe)

w/o moving anything it would protrude downwards a bit too low..and it would be angled...

It would be nice to have a full size spare with out losing cargo space.

What you run into here is the strength of those areas. A full sized spare is a heavy item, and a full size spare on a 2 foot swinging arm is going to put a lot of stress on some sheet metal and plastic.
