Default Speedo accuracy

Hi all, I wasn't sure where to post this, so feel free to move it mods.

I've read a few of the threads about the accuracy of the speedometer and wanted a few opinions.

I have a stock 05 xB, with factory steelies and it just got 4 new tires about a month ago or so. Size on the tires is 185/60R15 - I'm assuming this is the same size that came factory. Last week one of the steelies was replaced in the rear due to a bend.

Over the weekend, my husband and I were pulled over for speeding. We were under the impression that we were going about 70 in a 65 zone. Ok, so 5 miles over, but when my husband was handed the ticket, it said radar clocked us at 79mph!

Can the speedo be that wrong and how would I check it? Is there something the dealer can check ( I'd like to get some documentation if something is wrong to get the ticket dropped )?

I have a buddy who may loan me his GPS to see if it's off.

Thank you!

yeah, do some searching, there have been threads about how the speedo is off, even with oem size wheels and tires because the speedo wasn't particularly well calibrated for the US market, and the xb in japan also had different sized wheels, so the speedo is off somewhat. 9 mph is a bit high, but the margin of error between the speedo, and the margin of error with radar gun could be 9 mph. just do some digging, show that with a GPS device, your speed is off approximately this much at this speed etc.

Yep, as drax stated, the speedo is calibrated for a 185/65R15 that comes stock on the bB in Japan so it actually should read slightly higher with 185/60s.
