toyota prestige ramsey nj is a ripoff to its customers
anyone can help me here??
i got a 2006 xb automatic with 16,200 miles on it.
since i bought my xb new from toyota prestige in
ramsey new jersey, i have been going to them for
every oil change.
this past tuesday 9/14/08 i went for my oil change.
while waiting in the lounge the service guy told me
that the mechanic advised him that i should get this
recommendations....
1.) a trans service, $120.00
2.) fuel injection service $90.00
3.)air filter $15.00'
4.) cabin filter $20.00
Now i checked the scion scheduled maintenance guide,
and it doesnt say anything about trans service or
fuel injection at 16,000 miles!!
are the service department scamming its customers??
anyone know exactlly the milage is required to do a
trans flush?
or fuel injection service?
i greatly appreacite for any answers, and thanks in advanced.

Their not scamming you. Their just trying to sell you some services. They don't make their living on oil changes alone. Just like at the fast food joint when they advise you to supersize. You need it, no. Will it hurt you, yes (in the pocket book). Its not like their holding your car ransom if you don't get. Just say no and tell them you'll schedule it when the service book says too.

^^^Exactly!...
Btw, estados, they're basing these recommendations, NOT on your mileage but the year of the vehicle. Auto trans fluid should be replaced every 30k miles or 2 years. Same thing with everything they recommended to you, it's based on the year of your vehicle. A fuel injection service is NOT bad at every 15K miles either.
The air and cabin filters you can do on your own...very easy to do!!!

I like that they're recommending you "replace" the cabin filter on a car that doesn't come with one.
At my stealership, they go off the "GOODYEAR RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE PLAN" that is attached to every cubicle wall, and the service salesman (let's face it, they're salesmen) actually had the gall to argue with me that freaking goodyear knew more about what my car needed than Toyota.
I don't know if this is true any longer, because I stopped coming after the second oil change.
You really need to find an independent oil change place...ask around. You should be able to find one where they're really honest about what you actually NEED to extend the life of the car, and what you could do if your want your car to last a million miles.
Because they DO make their living on oil changes.

The prices are not too bad with the exeption of the FI service, may be. That one is a money maker for any shop and rarely needed on any car that uses good quality gasoline. Drop a bottle of cleaner in the tank every now and then and you will have same results for, like $10. If you cant change your air filter every 10-15K miles, ten the dealer or somebody else will try to make few $$ - nothing wrong with that.
Transmission flush for $120 is a good deal, but i dont think it's needed just yet. May be when you get to 50K.

Do your own maintenance, and you'll be a happier man. People don't call them 'stealerships' for nothing, after all.
They sell these 'services,' because most people are totally ignorant about how to maintain the most-expensive or 2nd-most-expensive thing they own, which is just f'in' sad.
It's also important to keep in mind that absolutely no one can force you to get work done on your car. You have every right to say, 'screw you retards, I'm getting my oil changed by competent people!' before they even touch your car. If anyone ever says that you 'can't leave without such and such,' they are ripping you off.
As an aside, I don't know how NJ is, but I do know that in NY, a shop cannot remove your inspection sticker before they tell you that you need any work done to pass inspection. If that happens, they are basically robbing you, because you have every right to leave, and shop around to get the work done before they take the sticker off.

Some of you are failing to realize that MOST people that go to a dealership, DON'T know crap about cars, DON'T have the time to work on their own cars or ACTUALLY have money to let someone else work on their cars. A majority of us on here are OBVIOUSLY car guys and CAN work on our own cars...that's why YOU call them "Stealerships"!!!

The only honest oil change place is your own driveway....... in December it was too cold to change the wife's explorers oil. I took it in and they tried selling me on an oil cleanse, fuel injection cleaning, air filter, and a couple other things.
It was a leased car.... I only changed the air filter because gas is so expensive otherwise I would not have done that either.

The fluid costs like 20 bucks and takes 15 minutes. Way cheaper than 80 bucks.
It would scare the crap outta me to leave my baby at a dealership for service work.

I have to say PRESTEGE TOYOTA in Ramsey NJ truly does SUCK.
The customer service is just terrible.
I have been trying to get 2 bolts from them for about 3 weeks now.
I order 2 simple bolts and they actually only order 1 bolt. Even after 2 phone calls, too. You get these deadbeat looking workers that come to the parts counter with chips on their shoulders.
(after waiting for 20 minutes)
None of their address files are up to date, so I have to keep using my old address to find the order. You tell them the address is not correct and the guy shrugs his shoulders.
One jerk, yells, "did you pay for these, yet?" as I am walking out the door.
I bought my car at Prestege but I will never return.
Scion is pure pricing anyway. WHO NEEDS THEM.
I will now have to go to Toyota in Hackensack.

Based on my experience (I'm at 40K) and your 16.2K miles...
1.) a trans service, $120.00 Scam-Recommended @30K
2.) fuel injection service $90.00 Scam-DIY-$10/1 minute
3.)air filter $15.00 Yes-DIY $10/1 minute
4.) cabin filter $20.00 Yes-DIY $0.50/10 minutes
>>>>Maintenance link<<<<
Truth be told, the car would *probably* do 20~30K WITHOUT changing anything. Oil, filter, trans fluid, brakes, nothing.
But if you are keeping it, you can change the fluids and do the maintenance! It will do 200~300K then! Toyota quality FTW!
The Benz dealer told me I needed a timing belt replacement @24K. Traded it in with 66K on it. We don't go back there any more. OK to recommend services, but as Metro said many do not know jack $hit about cars...and tend to get ripped off. Dealer should not take advantage OR assume customer knows nothing about cars!
