When should you really get your tires and wheels rotated
Hey everyone,
The manual say you should get an oil change and tire rotation every $5,000 miles.
What if your old school and do the oil change every 3k and the tire rotation with oil change every 6k would that make any difference?
My car only has 2500 mile on it and was thinging you just do the $5,000 miles maintenance. Did anyone's dealer let me pay the difference of the synth oil from the regular oil from their 1st 3 oil changes, by any chance?

Tire roation and oil change
Well, you'll start paying for oil changes at 12,000 instead of 20,000 miles, and you run the possible risk of losing tire-specific warranty coverage.
My xB was a year old when I bought it from the original owner. He hadn't used the oil changes. I paid the extra for synthetic, and they didn't bat an eye. Granted that synth lasts longer, I don't think the dealer cares which you use because, as long as it's under warranty, they get just a standard payoff no matter what happens.
Just my opinion - HTH.

As for the old school 3K miles; that has been around for 40 years. Today, Oil is better, filters are better, motors are better, etc.
If you change your oil at 3K miles you are wasting money and putting more used oil into the enviroment that needed. Besides, when was the last time any of us heard of a true oil related failure? They just don't happen hardly ever anymore.

I rotate my tires at 5,000 miles 'cause it's easy to see on the odometer when it's due. I would think 6,000 miles is just fine.

Huh? I don't know what you mean about "12,000 instead of 20,000" but it's clear that you think the tire warranty has something to do with tire rotation. That just isn't true;

my dad is asst service mgr at a toyota dealership and he did tell me that it possibly could void your tire warranty and that extended warranty def doesnt pay for it if you havent atleast had the tires rotated. He said that a guy bought a tc with the tire warranty and was getting his tires rotated every 5000 but at a local shop instead of the toyota dealership and because they didnt have proof that he had them rotated as specified then they didnt pay. I dont think that the actual time you have it done matters as long as it isnt over 5000 miles other wise they could void your tire warranty.

I changed my oil the first time at about 2,000 miles. I always change the oil a little sooner the first time in my new cars- I figure it has more stuff suspended in it from the engine breaking in. Then 5k/6m per the maintenance schedule. Similar for the trans oil- I'll change it around 10k to get rid of the break in particles. then according to the maintenance schedule afterward.
As for synth vs. dino for the free changes... I wouldn't worry about it. I'd just let them use the regular dino oil. Many say not to switch to synth right away to let the engine break in quicker. Personally, I don't think it matters.
For tire rotations... The Goodyear tires aren't so great anyway, be happy when they're worn and you have an excuse to replace them with something better. The xA's and xB's are pretty light and low power so they shouldn't go through tires very fast.

I don't rotate tires at all. Front wheel drive cars wear the front tires 50 to 60% faster than the rear tires due to power and turning. The rear tires are just followers, like skate wheels. Replace the fronts more often and you end up getting better traction and handling.
