Default xB, reaching 3000 RPM's while going 70 MPH, way too high,

we go 70MPH, and 3000 RPM's are registering which seems very high! we think there must be transmissn problem (car only has 33,000 miles on it). so we dont think the Overdrive actually works. it never freewheels when throttle is released, instead the engine brakes the car hard enough to move me forward slightly. we get only 28 miles to gallon at going 70. I need some advice, please! Please PM me.

perfectly normal, that is how it is. Anything over 65 and the gas mileage goes down fast

OP, you're lucky you don't own a manual tranny xB. Ours turn 3500 rpm at 70 mph. If you want decent mpg, slow down. I get 32 mpg @ 70 mph, and >40 mpg @ 55 mph.

Don't freak out! Completely normal. Stay under 3000RPM at highway speeds for boosts of MPG. That is the best bet.

If you turn overdrive off at highway speeds, then you will experience some high RPMs.

It will not freewheel when you let off!

Mine does around 3300 @75~80. Normal for auto trans. O/D seems like its working...try popping it off @70! I believe the stick is 500rpm higher or so.

I average 25~26 mpg. I guess thats due to the aftermarket wheels/tires.

Tana! Had to look at your toy collection and I didn't see the scion xb from Cars the movie!!!

I purchased mine at Target in October in the Hot Wheels aisle. It was expensive though, but the paint changes colors! Check it out!

Ha I almost got freaked out for a second! I'm revving around 3k grand at about 70. If overdrive was off it would be about 4500 or probably even 5k grand actually. At 90 I was revving only about 4200 I think. That was in overdrive though.

I have a manual with slightly stretched tires and run almost 4k at 70. It hurts my soul.

My auto with 195/60-15's runs about 2900rpm at an indicated 70mph.

so what would you have to do to lower the RPMs in 5th gear. I'm at the point where I'm ready to pay somebody to take the tranny apart and make 5th gear taller or something.

what can you do?

Why make a solution to a problem that doesnt exist?

Supposedly, the gearing on the Yaris is taller. Not sure how easy the swap would be though.

The transmission gear ratios are the same for the Yaris, Echo, et al, and our xBs, IIRC. The difference is in the differential's final drive ratio. You'd have to get Yaris output shaft, ring gear, and ring gear bolts, hope they fit, & swap them. Apparently, it can be done, as some Yaris hot rodder wanted the lower gearing of the 1G xB in his Yaris, & posted about it.

The parts cost wouldn't be bad, but the labor might be. If anyone does this successfully, let me know. I'd love to have it done myself, if I could find someone trustworthy to do the wrenching.

its not a problem. just an unappealing aspect of the vehicle. i love everything about the b except the screaming freeway RPMs.

i could care less how it affected acceleration or the shift from 4th to 5th or anything. if i could just run 70mph at no more than 3000k rpm i'd be in heaven.
