Michelle,

I have a quick question. I got some spare ballast sitting in the garage and a friend wants them. Now thier vehicle uses 9003 hi/lo beam lights, will just buying the bulbs work on these ballast or do hi/lo beam bulbs use different ballast?

Thanks

btw I have had your kit for about 2 months with NO problems!

HI,

The ballast are universal so if you have 2 good ballast in your hands, all your friends need is just the bulbs only , thanks!

i've had the 5K set in mine for nearly 2 months. my review:

if you read my other posts in this thread, you know that the first set of bulbs i was given were extremely loose. i sent the bulbs back, HID agreed that something was not right, and new bulbs were sent. unfortunately, this led to another error involving incorrect harnesses being sent, but HID did eventually make it right.

so let's review each piece of this kit:

the harnesses: that i can tell, these are hand-made harnesses. the wire is a thick gage and the ends do have a rubber sleeve to make a waterproof seal when installed. the only downside is that the metal pins kept trying to back out of the plastic housing when i was installing them, but a little bit of patience and some needle nose pliers took care of it.

the ballasts: no issues that i can tell. some have questioned where to install them. i installed mine to the inner fenders using only the double-sided tape provided. i thoroughly cleaned the fender with Simple Green, then followed with a wipe down of isopropanol before installing the adhesive pad. FWIW, my ballasts are the 'newer' all chrome models.

the bulbs: unfortunately, still loose. it's tolerable, but they do shake over bumps. some passengers say they don't notice, but i can tell and so can they after i point it out. again, just to contrast, i did re-install the OEM bulbs and this issue went away. i have had no issue with inconsistent or mismatching colors like others have, though.

the system: i have not had any issues with anything not working, bulbs going out, or things not turning on. as a rule, i do not turn on the lights until AFTER i have started the car. i have been told that turning them on BEFOREHAND can cause problems with some systems. the color of the system is GREAT, as is the increased field of visibility. compared to stock, i am VERY happy at how much more i can see. but, when you pull up next to a vehicle with OE HIDs, you will undoubtedly notice that yours are not as bright. i cannot blame this on the kit since it could be a number of things. for starters, this kit is 35W vs the 55W most (all?) OEs use. second, our bulb housings were not designed for HIDs, per se. lastly, it could just be a difference in Kelvin rating. i specifically went for the lowest Kelvin available to get as much light as possible, but it's my understanding that OE systems work at a lower Kelvin rating than what you can get in the aftermarket.

HID (as a company): first things first, Michelle is quite simply one of the best customer service people i have ever 'seen' when it comes to aftermarket car parts from online vendors. she's all over e-mails, phone calls, forum posts, etc. just fantastic! however, i was a little disappointed that no attempt was made to cover shipping costs for the bulbs i had to return, especially when it was agreed that something was wrong with the bulbs.

in the end, it does seem you get what you pay for. that's not a slam at all; it just seems the most honest way to describe my experience with HID and their product. had i spent more for it, i may be a bit upset. but since it was so cheap, i'm fairly content. i think next time i might spend more money to buy something with a bit more consistent quality, though.

Mike

PS - I will try to get some pictures this weekend of my bulbs vs my friend's stock bulbs in his fiancee's 09 xB. the difference really is 'night and day'.

Nice review. But don't ALL aftermarket HID systems flicker when you go over bumps?

My bulbs are not loose in the housing, but they always flicker when I go over bumps.

I have had the HIDextra kit for about 6 months, and no flickering or movement from the bulbs at all... nice, tight & bright.

I had no flickering either, with the HIDExtra kit(s) I had, or the kit I currently have.

based on the many, many vehicles i have ridden in with OEM HID systems, i would say 'no'. to me, it's obvious where the flicker comes from. i can ever so slightly jiggle the bulb in the housing. not much, but it is there. however, even that slight amount of give translates to a noticeable flicker. again, in contrast, the OEM bulbs snaps into place in the housing, nice and tight. i cannot jiggle it at all. no flicker.

i tried to write the review as honestly as i could. like i said, i'm happy overall with the set given the cost. there's just those few little things i would need resolved before i would rant and rave about it.

I was talking about AFTERMARKET. When I ride in my buddies car, his does the same thing. He used an aftermarket HID kit in his Mazda3 and it flickers when he goes over bumps just like mine do.

@toyotamastertechnician: That's weird. I'm not sure why you're having problems with your radio, for I did not have any with mine. I also thought that it was normal to flicker, because my buddies have flickering lights, too, but I'm not sure what brands they have.

Radio problems are not normal, but I have heard of some people having reception static problems also.

Flickering headlights are never normal. I guess I should count my blessings that I haven't had a single problem with my after-market HID's.

Long story short in regards to the radio static, you get what you pay for. Its a direct result of electrical current that's not properly cleaned up and sent out by the ballast. You can try wrapping your ballasts and the wire that goes from the ballast to the bulb, in aluminum foil (not a joke!) to rectify the situation. It is because of this issue, that many people recommend that you should wire your HID kit directly to the battery for power. If your ballast is not handling the electrical current correctly for your lights, think about what it could do to your stock wiring or ECU?

**Mind you this is just a verbal regurgitation of what I've read online from others who seem to know what they are talking about. I'm def. not an expert on this, I just did a little research after hearing horror stories of fried wiring and ECU's.**

Well, that's just not good for me then.

It's funny because my right passenger one does not output light at all. I think it's the housing itself because the light's dim, and I switched the connections, bulbs, etc. around to see if I could replicate it, but to no avail.

I thought the flickering was normal. I mean, I see it all the time, not just in my friends cars, but in others driving down the road, too.

Isn't MobileHID dead now? Didn't they stop selling HID kits to us? I can't order through their site anymore.

Michelle,

Sorry if this has been asked before, but do you offer any bulbs in a purple color? I would be interested in a 30k or a violet color if you make those. I did not see anything on your website so I figured I would ask. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks
