Oh I see, def don't want a ticket. How would you be able to tint from the outside with all the bumps on the back lights?

Tinting your tail lights is not legal in California; you can do it, just be forewarned that it is cause to be pulled over and ticketed.

California Vehicle Code:

Taillamps

24600. During darkness every motor vehicle which is not in combination with any other vehicle and every vehicle at the end of a combination of vehicles shall be equipped with lighted taillamps mounted on the rear as follows:

(e) Taillamps shall be red in color

CIONIDE, is it possible to at least give them a light tint? The penal code only states that the tailamps should be red in color, even if it is dark red, it is still red right? Not trying to be sarcastic, just wondering.

The tint most people use is VHT Nightshade. It gets darker as you apply more coats (spray-on), so yes, you could have a little lighter look. Clear gloss is usually used as a top coat.

Keep in mind that if you ever where to get pulled over because an officer thinks they look too dark, you will then be explaining/arguing with the police. Good luck on that one in California.

I think tinted tails look great, but personally I'm waiting until I can afford the Anzo LED tails that are at least DOT compliant.

Here's what they look like installed on Clasic Silver:

So its possible to throw a clear gloss on the outside?
And yeah, good point about the cops in CA, especially in SoCal man, but its mostly the CHP and Sheriffs.

correct me if im wrong. to me all that means is that color of the bulbs and not the lens has to be red. and that you can have a black lens as long as it lights up red you should be good? and at night you cant tell what color the lens is either way.

ex: the new sti and wrx have a clear lens no red at all in color. but they light up red.

Most tail lights use a superglue type substance to hold it together and you actually have to cut it apart. Don't know if the ones you trying to take apart are like that though.

You are correct with the spirit of the law RoboX. That is one of the reasons that the smoked Anzo tails are DOT approved and legal... they light up BRIGHT red, even though they are tinted dark. You will also notice that on the top of the Anzo lens where there is no bulb and only a reflector (just like our stock tails), they are not smoked in that area. This allows the reflector portion to reflect red light, which it does not do very well if smoked.

When you look at a stock smoked lens at night, it's reddish when the bulbs are on, but certainly not as bright red as stock without any tint. The ANZO LEDs light up bright red, right through the smoked lens, hence their DOT compliance.

As I mentioned earlier, each individual can take their chances with the laws in their respective states, but here in California I choose not to try and explain to a cop that he is wrong, or should cut me some slack. At least with the ANZOs I can show that they are DOT approved to the officer, or to the judge if it ever gets that far. Plus I like the LED look better than smoked over incandescent bulbs.

I rest my case, your honor.

Not true have to remember just because its dot approved doesnt mean its legal in your state. i got a set of dot approved yellow head lights it even came with a sticker stating that it met dot compliance still got it ticket. took it to court and the judge stated that every state is different blah blah blah. and i still got the ticket.

That's technically true, but it's a HUGE step towards convincing a cop not to give me a ticket. That way I can also claim that it was a dealership accessory, and it will seem plausible.

I'm sticking with plausible deniability.

You're right, all I said was that it is a huge step; I didn't say that I wouldn't end up falling down the stairs.

That being said, I feel safer chancing it with the ANZO tails, than tinted stock. Would never even consider yellow head lights, DOT or not, that's what fog lights are for.

BTW, sweet job on your xB, did you ever swap out the springs?
