I feel that having a high beam HID is unnecessary as they are already quite impressive as OEM. I'm going to be purchasing a low beam HID kit sometime soon.

hidplanet.com is a really good resource to those who want to know more about HID technology or doing your own true-retro.
i have the 5k mobile HID's with squirrel finders removed and my cutoff lines are very very straight, maybe not as clear cut (still using the stock fresnel lenses cus i didn't wanna risk breaking my stock headlights trying to insert clear ones).
i'll post some pix that use to be on one of the threads (lost my university webspace, but just recently discovered the wonderful world of free-pic hosting).
mobileHID offers good service , i had an issue where a ballast went bad after a few months and got a free replacement. the only issue i have is some interference at certain FM radio frequencies while the lights are on.
i'd say that if you do use a off-the-shelf HID kit that is specified for the 2g xB, as long as you mod the squirrel finders you will not blind anyone as long as you adjust them to proper height (this is fairly easy to do) and make sure the lights are seated correctly in the socket.

I'm all for aftermarket... but I'd prefer a retrofit over anything else.
Although the cutoff can be corrected and perfect color temperature achieved with an aftermarket kit, there is still no way to gain even half the light performance of an OEM retrofit.
Retrofits do more than focus on the bulb; the focus is on the projector and its qualities as well. I have an Infinity FX OEM retrofit and I can provide light for all lanes on the interstate. The only downfall to investing in a retrofit is the price.
Aftermarket kits are definitely the way to go if you want to stay under hundreds of dollars.

Ha... yea I feel you, but if retrofits were even $500, I'd be in a piece of mind state. One won't find quality services for a retrofit for under $1,000 depending on the selected projector and customized options.
In all, there's nothing wrong with HID kits from temperatures 4,300 to 6,000 k (in my opinion) but they must be either put inside of projectors or installed with glare shields to reduce glare.
