Installing rear spoiler

Installing rear spoiler
I was just wanting to see if someone that has installed a rear spoiler could tell me about it. It is pretty simple or should I let a dealer do it? The dealer wanted $697.00 for one installed but I can order one from Sparks Toyota for around $265.00.

aftermarket comes with some template strips. If you are a diy kinda person it should not be difficult. The hardest part is the mental stress of drilling a brand new car. You only have to drill 2 holes

I put mine on myself.. dealer wanted 425 too.. but the parts manager let me have it for 239, but I also had to buy the so called "Install Kit".. 23 dollars extra.. The install kit only consists of detailed instructions from Toyota & a pair of templates..
Now the Scion wing has 2 studs built in(1 one each side), so you cannot just "STICK IT" on... unless you use a buzz tool & cut off those studs.......
with the templates taped down you lightly center punch 4 spots for drilling (2 for each side)...
then just fowwlow the instructions & you'll have it on in less than one hour & save yourself around 200 deniro.......... good luck... jh

I bought mine on EBay from the Toyota dealer in MA that is selling a bunch of 2008 Scion xB stuff on EBay. Got it for under $300 and included the templates and instructions. Took me less than 1 hour to install, and most of that time was contemplating and remeasuring over and over the locations for the holes. Had to make a run to Home Depot to get the right size drill bits too. Worked like a charm. Just be sure to start removing the tape covering before bolting it on. The tape is really, really, really sticky, and won't let go of the covering very easily. Had a little trouble because I didn't start it far enough before putting it back on.

OK guy those of you that are thinking you can get aways with ust replacing the tape with 3m super tape that sticks on any thing... dont do it.. it will not hold this wing for some strange reason.. Mines fell off 2 times and lucky i have my car cover on so it didnt do any damage. I gut off the stud and just taped it on.. it dont work that way for ths wing... I am not going to drill ahole becuase im in the process of designing a wing for the car .. unless that 3m tape is lossing its sticking power..
My old wings on my other XB was like fused on the car .. had a hell of a time getting it off the car..

look at how many other factory holes are in your new scion already!!! 4 more aint gonna hurt.. just do this..
get some paint & paint the bare metal that's created by drilling.. just dab some on a q tip & rub it inside your holes.. wallla!! done.....
then get some clear silicone automotive sealant & after the paint dries & you've test fitted your wing...
pump squirts of the silicone sealant into the holes from both sides.. & coat your studs with it too.. then put the sucker on.... ( please be sure to remove your stickey tape tape one peice at a time & PUT IT BACK ON!!!.. One at a time... take it off & PUT IT BACK ON>> It makes taking it off easier when you're at that removal step.. REMEBER. take it off. stick it right back on....))
coat the 2 remaining torex screws with the sealant & screw them in just enought to get 'em started...
then start your nuts onto the existing wing studs(already siliconed). but not to tighten them yet..
when you have all the screws started & your nuts started & you are sure you have enough sealant gobbed up in therre... the wing should be still loosely on there.....
NOW take off the tape that covers the stickey stuff......
with all the tape section removed.. now tighten your screws & nuts & that's it!!!!. put your wire chafing stud cover on the drivers side & button it up!!!.. you just saved yourself about 200 clams!!!!... think of the stuff you could buy with that 200$$...... good luck... jh
PS eight08customs....... we wanna see pictures of YOUR newely created custom wing......... I may have you make me one if I like it better than Scion's version.....

I did mine myself, it took me awhile to pull the trigger on the drill.
Make sure you use drill stops, you don't want to have drill marks as seen on some of the dealer installs.
Don't foget the tape.
I slotted my holes with a die grinder to move the wing flush. I also used touch-up paint to seal the raw metal.
Make sure you clean up really good, the metal filings will make rust spots on your paint if you leave them.

I read on an ebay vendor's site that you could spray water on the surface
of the car where the spoiler would attach, then put the spoiler in place with the sticky tape exposed, and you would still be able to move it around a little to get it positioned just right. I presume the water would eventually "go away" and the sticky tape would be left to do its job. Anybody tried this technique? I don't mean the tape would be the only thing holding the spoiler on, you would still use the normal fasteners, this
water trick would just be to aid in exact positioning.
