Default 4.5qt in, 3qt out

I changed my oil at 10k last year and put in 4.5 quarts of oil 5w-20.

It was time to change the oil at 15k, and only about 3 quarts made it back out the engine. I dont have any leaks anywhere from the looks of it, does the engine really eat this much oil?

It shouldn't. About 1/2 qt is trapped in the filter and maybe 1/2 qt in the engine. I haven't noticed any oil loss in 20k miles.

I changed my oil yesterday on my 2nd gen, I used the 4qt jug of M1 synthetic. I checked the dip stick after the oil change, and the oil level is definitely between the 2 dots. but less than halfway between them. should I add a half a qt more?
