Auto Tranny fluid interval
#21
Toyota ATF-WS (World Standard) Automatic Transmission Fluid used in certain 2004-2008 vehicles is NOT compatible with Toyota T-IV or Dexron ATF. WS ATF was introduced to reduce maintenance costs and increase the mileage between scheduled maintenance checks. The recommended maintenance interval for INSPECTION is 100,000 miles; ATF-WS does NOT require any flushing or changing during the life of the vehicle. "

ATF WS question
I am looking at changing out the ATF WS on my 09 xb. i only want to do the drain fill at this point. is it as easy as it sounds. is there gasket on the drain plug that needs to be replaced? The dealers want something like $12.50 qt. anyone know where to get it cheaper? thanks

To those of you changing or even contemplating changing your "lifetime" ATF more often than 30k miles, please stop. Even 30k is ridiculously often for synthetic ATF that much-more-comptetent-than-us Toyota engineers have determined is useable for the lifetime of your vehicle. While I'm on this rant, stop changing your motor oil more often than 5k miles! The 3k oil change myth is leftover from the 1950s and pre-dates the advent of detergent, multi-viscocity motor oils, let alone synthetics and blends.
Did you know that over-the-road trucks often go 100k between oil changes? That diesel locomotives often don't get oil changes at all? That many diesel locomotives from the 1950s are still in active 24/7 use today without regular oil changes?
While it's true that gasoline engines contaminate their motor oil more than diesels, it's not enough to even begin to justify 3k changes. Stop letting Jiffy Lube rape you, our environment and stop perpetuating the need for a military budget larger than the next 13 highest military-spending nations on earth combined in order to protect our oil-dependent economy.
PLEASE STOP!!!
BTW, there are alternatives to WS. RedLine D6 and Amsoil LTV are both WS compatible. What makes them WS compatible is their lighter viscosity for reduced parastic drag and increased fuel economy. Personally I opted for "normal (Dex III) viscosity" Mobil 1 after talking to Mobil tech support about it. Given my personal requirements for increased line pressure, film strength and shear tolerance over increased fuel economy, we agreed that a "normal" viscosity ATF was better suited to my turbo-charged needs. 30k miles later (without a change) and the tranny is as good as new and the ATF appears likewise. YMMV but I doubt it.
P.S; I changed my ATF at ~20k to switch over to M1 and I also replaced the filter which appeared to be capable of going at least another 80k miles. The filter looked like new. All I found was a little metallic dust on the magnets in the bottom of the pan. I wouldn't consider changing the filter more often than 50k miles and that's over-killl.
