Default When to Replace Timing Belt?

My 08 xB is going on 66,000 miles. When should the timing belt be changed?

Thanks,
JoeSpeed

Doesn't the 2nd gen xB have the same engine as the tC? If so isn't that a chain not belt?

replace when it breaks, or when the belt looks glazed or worn/cracked, right?

Chain or Belt they must be replace at some point. Plus you don't want to wait until it breaks, cus you will need new valves, tie rod, etc...

look it up in your schedule maintenance book. it should be in there somewhere if it is required to ever be replaced.

it should be good for roughly 100k miles. my old explorer went way past that on the original timing chain.

The timing chain does last longer than the belt.

The Maintenance manual states:
@ 75,000 inspect the Drive Belt and again @ 90,000
Replace at the first sign of wear.

Thats the serpentine, not the timing. It's a chain and they go well over 100k miles. Also, isnt the 2.4L a non interference engine?

Much longer, I wouldn't be surprised if the xB timing change can go 150k+ miles.

The vehicle has a LIFETIME timing chain system. Same as tC and Camry.

The serpentine belt is check at 75,000 and 90,000 and replace at first sign of wear.

Also yes the Toyota engines are a non interference engine. That does not mean the engine would not be damaged on a failure of the timing system but it is not a certainty of being damaged like the Honda.

The serpentine belt is a seperate belt than the timing belt/chain on a vehicle.

The serpentine belt is the belt that controls all the accessory pulleys such as the a/c compressor, power steering, and others. The timing chain cannot normally be seen just by popping your hood open.

In my Prelude the crank pulley bolt snapped. Luckily there was no head damage.

Uhh -- crank pulleys are not responsible for driving the timing belt, they are responsible for driving the accessory belts -- frequently described as "serpentine" belts if they drive a number of pulleys. A crank pulley coming loose will cost you the function of your alternator, A/C, and perhaps your water pump (which is very dangerous), but will not place the timing between the crank and valves at risk.

Default both

these cars have both. a timing chain which yes was stated b4. lifetime. but should be checked about every 60m to insure its good. Also has a serpentine belt (v-belt) which drives everything else. alt, steering, water pump, so on.

just so you all know.
im looking at infostream toyota right now. i like it, its alil better than our standard owners manuals.

take care
