I didn't replace the water pump the first time I changed the belt on my old focus even if almost all the how to replace a timing belt manuals ive read suggested it should be done. That proved to be a costly mistake just 25,000 miles later.

I've read the 2AZ-FE is a non-interference design, so if the chain breaks it will just die. Still, yes, it makes little sense to wait for it to break.

PS. Yes, it's a chain, not a belt !

just so you all know.
im looking at infostream toyota right now. i like it, its alil better than our standard owners manuals.

take care
All cars have separate drive for the auxiliary equipment and the cams. That's the way engines are designed probably going back to the very first time an accessory was attached to an engine.

Depends on the car. My Eclipse 4G63 is 60K for the timing belt and every other change, the water pump as well. Unfortunately, it also seems to need a new hydraulic tensioner with each timing belt change .

Also yes the Toyota engines are a non interference engine. That does not mean the engine would not be damaged on a failure of the timing system but it is not a certainty of being damaged like the Honda.
Your post was very confusing, you said the Toyota engines are non interference engines, but then later said that does not mean the engine would not be damaged.

Isn't that the whole purpose of knowing the difference between interference and non interference is the determination of, " if the pistons are going to hit and bend the valves" if there is a issue with valve/ piston timing?

If your going to post on here at least be clear if you even know what your talking about. Hope this list makes things clear, toyota engines are not all non interference.
