12 or 14 Gallon Tank?
#21
I've finally gotten past the "zip around town" stage. I'm driving much more casually like i used to with my 06 xB.
I live <2mi from work so its not the best mileage in the world, about 25mpg. However with 4 people, a dog, and a trunk full of luggage on a trip to the beach, by the time i got home and filled up and did the math i got 29.8mpg (The meter which i had reset before the trip said 30mpg, so its accurate).
hope thats helpful
Edit: Also, in regards to resetting the computer for avg mpg, I reset mine when i fill up. Basicly just means i dont have to do any math at the pump. Like i said above it's been very accurate for me so I'm just resetting it along with my A-Trip meter.

Low Fuel indicator turned on today,. This is my first tank of gas and it only took me a total of 255 miles. If that is the case, that means roughly about 20-21 mpg.... Granted I did plenty of stop and go, but come on.. only 250 on one tank? If i only would have known...

If you REALLY want to know.....
I have an experiment for you........ since it's still new I feel you could pull this off without suffering any ill side effects....
Get yourself a gas can with say 2 gallons in it & put in in the back of your xB2 along with a funnel...
NOW.. next time you run LOW on fuel, go ahead & keep driving. keep driving till you run her completely out!!! Till she stalls!!! (all the while with your "Miles 2 MT" light on).
Then put your 2 gallons in & start her up & drive it to the gas station & fill her up!. Let's see how many gallons it will take to fill it up!!!
Try that & let us know just how far you drove when the computer said you couldn't & how much gas it takes to fill it after completly empting her out!... Good Luck .. jh

Do keep in mind that new engines tend to burn more fuel as they get past the initial wear-in stages, plus the fact that you, the driver, are still getting used to the feel of the vehicle and are likely applying more power than necessary more often than usual, so you end up burning even more fuel.
I'd say wait till you hit the 1000 mile mark before doing any economy testing.

My low fuel light came on a couple days ago. I drove it for another day, then filled it. The computer said I had 13 miles left to go at fill up.
Filling it completely up, and I mean well beyond the first click off, netted 12.49 gallons. I went 305.8 miles. That caluclates out to about 24.5 mpg.
The computer said I was averaging 26.6 mpg.
Last fill up, it said I had 255 miles to go. This time it said I had 289 miles. Seems to learn as it goes.
All of the above is on 19" wheels, and mostly short, stop and go, trips.

Got my 1 gallon can ready & decided to run the tank DRY!
Getting real close.. 1 mile to EMPTY
ZERO! I should be pushing the car now...
Dammn Still driving..... Computer is tellling me I CANT
I reset the Trip A after 5 miles AFTER I reached the big ZERO.......
Then went 25 MORE Before I chickened out & bought gas...
13.3 gallons later.. NOW the car NEVER stopped! I could have kept driving, but i bailed...Went about 30 miles more AFTER the range meter said "0".... haha haha hah..
& theres my proof! I am going with a 14 gallon tank.... jh

Sorry undig this thread...I totally forgot that I had started it and when I did...a year ago....I just accepted the fact that maybe a had a smaller tank and just lived with it....until I took the car on a road trip and only got 300 miles to a tank, with ALL highway driving. It didn't seem right. Now I come back to this thread a year later and discover why I don't put more that 12 gallons in. Just want to say thanks for the testing this out, I'm gonna try this for my self too.
You saved me a trip to dealer trying to argue with them that I got a defected gas tank.

I bought my 08 xB in Sep 07 and noticed that after letting the low-fuel light come on, I could only get about 11 gals in. I knew it was a 14 gal tank so I wanted to test the accuracy of the 'miles til empty' computer. I went 20 miles over '0 til emply' and still only added 12.something gals. I estimated my actual miles til empty was 60 miles past '0 til empty.' I do not make a habit of running that close to empty but it didn't hurt on a car that new with little or no crud in the tank...I just wanted to know. I don't know if there is any inter-xB variability in these computers so don't take my word for it until you test. Let me know if you find something different.

I was in the same situation when I went camping earlier last month. I had a little less than half of a tank when I was leaving for home from the campsite. I was doubting whether I would make it home, it's a 150 mile drive. I made it home with the needle still above empty and no empty light. I drove for 3 more days after that, about 50 miles after the empty light came on. I really pushed it to the max, then chickened out and got gas, it was 14.1 gallons :D

Beats me, it comes on just before the needle touches the E. I was on my way to the gas station and it came on.
On my xa the fuel logo did not blink til it was ike past E and it took like 9.9 gallons to fill up.
My tacoma is suppose to have a lamp, but when its at the bottom tip of the gas meter I got a bit worried and went ahead and filled it. Turns out 2 gallons left as it has a 18 gallon tank.

Keep in mind that the fuel pump is cooled by gas running through it, running dry may cause the pump to overheat.
Also, running it real low causes the pump to start sucking all the sediment and bits of rubbish, so don't make running her low a habit.

I have noticed that i get around 25mpg with my spirited driving... Around 280 miles before i fill up... i figure i could go as much as 50 more miles once the 0 range comes on, but i have no desire to test that theory...
