Default 2011 xB Fuel Consumption

Hi, I need some help. Anyone else getting really bad fuel consumption with their xB. I am approaching the 8000 kms mark and only getting 15L/100kms. Roughly 300kms per tank. I brought it in back when I had about 2000 kms on the car and was told by Toyota that it is because of the wear in period and the car would have to be retested after 8000 kms. I have aftermarket wheels on the car and I understand that this can effect consumption but I'll never believe it can cause this much of a difference. So, 6 months later and 5000 kms more and not much has changed. I plan to bring my car in for a new diagnostic very soon and depending on what I am told I may contact Toyota Canada. Is this a known problem with the xB?

Thanks for the fast reply. I checked on an online converter and it says 15.68 MPG. Sorry I forgot that many people use MPG. My wheels are 18" XXR 502 with Goodyear Eagle GTs 235/40/18.

Yeah, your original post was alien to anyone in the USA LOL!

Tires and rims can have quite an effect on milage but 15.8 seems waaaay low.

Read through most of the XB milage posts and they' re posting between 22 & 28 mpg. Mine at 4200 mi is averaging 25.6 (measured fuel against miles) with stick 16" wheels and Goodyears. It's getting better as the thing breaks in.

I doubt very much the rims got anything to do with your problem. Could be a fuel leak somewhere? In the line or under the tank. What's the rpm running at at idle? Not at start up, but after it's warmed up. There could be a few things, but it's hard to help without the car right here.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll check the RPMs tomorrow morning. I do notice when it is running idle though, that it revs up and down.

Yeah, 15 sounds way low, even for city driving. Your rough idle is a big clue: any work done on the engine lately?

Any updates? It's always good to post outcomes and fixes for everyone in the future...

I will be sure to update, my appt with Toyota is on the 14th of Dec. I've done no work on the engine as it is still under a year old. I hope I get it fixed once and for all. Thanks for checking in!

If engine idle is unstable, you may well have a vacuum leak. Given such a low MPG, either you drive with your foot to the floor, or whatever was last done to your engine really messed up . My suggestions are first to consider your driving habits, and second to take a look at your intake manifold vacuum.

I have a 2011 5-speed with almost 5,000 miles. I drive mostly city and I am always late so I always have my foot in it. My friends say I drive it like a race car. I get about 21-22 mpg in the city and got 24 on a recent hwy road trip. I can't see, given how I drive mine, how any xb can get that bad of gas mileage. Something has got to wrong.

I use my 2012 mainly for commuting and even though it's only 1.8 miles each way I have 6 Traffic Lights to idle at, bad for Gas Mileage. I get a constant 24.5.

The best so far is 31 on a 90 mile drive.

BTW, my 2008 gave a constant 22.4 during the week back and forth to work.

So, I went back in for my diagnostic (second time) and was told this consumption is normal for this vehicle. Yes the guy really said that, like I'm some kind of retard. Anyway, I complained to the dealership and they informed me to contact Toyota Canada, which I was going to do anyway. He said they may have better knowledge on how to fix my problem. So, as soon as I get a reply from them I will be sure to update.
...and a Huge thank you for all the replys!

well you've heard plenty of replies, but I'll add, yes, it seems a good 5mpg low at the least, the only case is if your sitting still in traffic, and warming your car up for 20 min a day with a short commute, maybe. I've been getting a little worse in the winter, people say its a winter mix gas that is less performing.(Mine is 25-27mpg) Your wheels are decent I they probably aren't too heavy, I think they come only in 8.5" width. I'd say your idle is a good sign of there's something going on. That's bs with the dealer, did they even look at anything? They know that's not normal mileage, they should at least plug it on a scanner, maybe see the plug color, you could always check them. If they've became darker, your using more fuel. Mine were a pretty light tan color.
