Default Anyone here not going through Scion for their oil changes?

When I bought the car I got the lifetime oil changes for $1 and first oil changed is suppose to be at 5,000 miles. Well to be honest with you, I don't feel comfortable with someone else touching my cars. I've done all my maintenance on my cars since I was like 16.

I'm about 50 miles from hitting 1000 miles and my dad mentioned that I should go ahead and change the oil. While I religoulsy changed my oil every 3000 miles (dont feel comfortable waiting till 5k), is it too soon? Also what brand is recommended for this motor? I've always used castrol conventional oil and never had any problems.

Where I bought my xB they put a sticker on my window recommending 1st service at 1k miles. I do all of my own stuff as well since I dont feel comfortable with anyone else touching my car. Do it yourself and be happy Use whatever oil youve had experience with but dont be scared to try new brands either. I plan on using Mobil 1.

I keep my engine CLEAN. The first oil change, they spilled oil all over the cover and down the side of the engine. I cleaned it up afterwards, and got them to clean it again on second trip, but they messed something else up (forgot what).

The dealers are required to mess up your ride. I don't trust them unless I am forced to at this point. It was only recently they stopped using TAP WATER for flushing radiators! The tech who spilled oil and left it over a NEW ENGINE should of been fired. That was completely unacceptable.

Yeah, I don't use the dealer as well. I do my own regular services and when it's time to do major work and services, I'll probably go to a local shop I trust. The dealer is really only good for warranty work.

So far I have used only Mobil1 oil and OEM Toyota filters. good combination.

I also do it my self. I just hit 3,000 miles on my xb. Should I had changed the oil at 1,000? Should I wait till 5,000 or do it now? PS: Anyone knows about ROYAL PURPLE oil?

Thanks everyone for the quick replies! I was thinking about trying mobil 1 in my xb since i've always heard good things about it. I also plan to use the toyota filter so that if I ever have any kind of engine failure *knock on wood* , toyota does not give me some bs excuse of denying warranty for using an aftermarket oil filter.

Oh btw I know this is kind of off topic but do you guys with 5-speeds have a loud whine in first in second gear? I know manuals can be but when I'm in first & second and most of the time slowing down with the gas off, it tends to whine quite loud. Should I be worried...... ?

Royal Purple is good stuff. i ran it in my dirt racecar all year with no motor failures.
if it can protect a motor that runs 7,000 RPM all night long all year then its deff good for your daily driver

Ill probably let the dealer do the first change for me so I don't have to hassle with the oil filter, and hopefully the one they put on will be less difficult when I do it myself.

I'm kinda hesitant to wait til 5K to change the oil as well. Plus, it's so damn easy to reach the oil filter, how can you not want to do your own changes?

Is it easier to take off the factory installed oil filter or the oil filter placed on a the dealer?

I just checked, and other then the stupid plastic cover, looks fairly easy to do. What tool is best to remove it? I have a wrench thing I got from walmart, but wondering if anybody has a better tool for the "vertical" oil filters. Mine will work, but seems it will take some time to get it to grip... Bad angles!

I use the cup shaped ratchet attachment with an extension. I only use it to pull off the old filter, and hand tighten the replacement filters. Those attachments are cheap, only a few dollars at Auto Zone or Advanced Auto Parts.

BTW, never use the filters with the hand grips. I've had two of those get stuck on other vehicles with very little room to work with.

Although probably a stupid question, will the dealer still rotate my tires for free if I do the oil change, or will they "say" I have to do both?

Again, really stupid question but just making sure!

Free? They charged me $20 for that, but the first three oil changes are free.

I have my first 5k and 10k mile oil changes free. And that also comes with a complete vehicle inspection. But i guess its different in each state. After my second oil change from the dealer ill do it myself.
What kind of oil does scion/toyota use anyways?
and what kind of anti freeze?? Ive never seen pink/purple antifreeze before

Hmmm, my service manual says free oil change and tire rotation. Maybe I read it wrong!
