JS, those two techs are wrong or flat out lying to you. They can't void your warranty if you change your oil every 10,000 miles. They would have to prove that the extended oil drain directly caused the malfunction or break down. An example: Longer oil change intervals cannot deny a steering box malfunction repair.

Like I said, extending drains will probably give them some ammunition to try and deny a repair, meaning an uphill battle, but not a denial.

The only loophole I see is this. The Moss-Magnusson Act says in part that a Manufacturer cannot deny warranty work because the owner used non OEM parts, unless the manufacturer provides those parts free of charge. Since Scion does provide the first two maintenance services free at 5,000 and 10,000 miles, they might try that angle.

Less than reputable dealerships follow the same mantra as many insurance companies. Deny claims in hopes that clients accept their lumps. Only those who make a big stink and fight for their rights should be serviced.

I just bought my XB two days ago, and 150 miles so far. What I will say is I have every intention of letting the dealership change the oil the first 5000 and 10000 miles. In the last 4 vehicles(2 high performance cars, and 1 motorcycle)that I've bought new its typically recommended that you let the original oil stay in for a while(break-in oil). Also, I do agree with running high quality synthetic oil, however, new car manufacturers often recommend not running synthetic until the motor is properly broken in(regular motor oil allows rings to seat properly)

When you do your own service how do you reset the maintenance required light? I figured I'd ask here but it's probably in my book.

Dealers are morons!

I brought mine into the dealer Saturday for my 5K oil change/tire rotation and while waiting I was looking around the car lot and heard then noticed the oil change bozo pounding a impact socket onto my lug nuts! I went over there in a rage asking WTF are you pounding on my custom wheels for? He pulled the proper wheel socket out of the glove box that came with the wheels but since it didn't fit his impact he just decided to pound a socket on there. I didn't even want or know they were going to rotate the tires, now the dealer is replacing a wheel and a set of lug nuts!

That is scary. I know that screwball mechanics are the exception, and not the rule, but there many more war stories out there than there should be. That's why I didn't give those two free services a second thought. I do it, I take my time, and I know it's done right.
