Default Behind The Grill Blackout

I know this must be something you guy's do, but I haven't found anything on it. No matter how clean and nice my XB looks, everytime I look at it, this is all I see. The red crap behind the grill.

I just had to fix it. So....

This is what I have now. Much better, and I don't fall asleep at night obsessing over it.

Easy mod. Well worth the effort.

looks 100x better!

i did the same thing to my tc, you see a vertical metal bar and on lighter colored tc's it is very visible through the grill, so i painted it black too!

Top notch "Low $$" mod for sure. Looks awesome. I will be doing that to mine soon. Thanks for the great idea.

Yeah I definitely plan to do the same when I get my grille. Good thing our stock non rs grille hides all that.

Great idea! I will do that on my RS6, really don't like the black and red behind the grille. Did you just use regular spray paint?

Regular spray paint, but satin finish. The reflection off of high gloss would be almost as bad as the red.

You know, I've only had my RS6.0 for a week now, and was gone for four days. I'm also tall (6'4"), so I'm usually looking down at the front of the car. Until you mentioned it, I hadn't noticed all that red behind the grill. Now it stands out like a sore thumb and I won't get a good night's sleep until I blackout mine, too.

Seriously, looks great. Keep up the good work.

Did you do prime or prep the surface at all before painting? How easy is it to remove the grill?

No prime necessary, just wipe clean, mask and paint.

The grill removal is easy. Mostly those plastic push rivets. Pull the center up with a knife point, then pull the rivet out. Two bolts. The worst part (really nothing, but compared to the rest) is the small clips that are part of the grill, at the bottom. Just push on them and pull gently.

The whole job, including letting the paint semi-dry, took about a half hour. It couldn't be much easier. When you get the grill off, put it somewhere safe (don't step on it). They are specific to the RS6 and are not cheap.
