Default clunky drivetrain?

so, my 09 xB2 only has about 900 miles on it. i've been following the break-in procedurs and guidelines set forth in the manual TO THE LETTER (translation: i'm not beating on it in the slightest).

putting around town last night, i was noticing an audible clunk whenever i went to shift. i haven't isolated it to being associatd to the clutch, or the shifter/tranny, or......? some more driving today should help with that.

i'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed this? i'm not IMMEDIATELY alarmed, but if it gets worse i'll likely take it in.

anyone else having this issue?

Mike

Yep, the 5-speed transmission in the xB2 is kind of clunky. Like coryjames said, I usually notice it in a 1st to 2nd shift. You will notice that the shifter is a little clunky in general. It's not that bad, it just isn't that great.

I've been told the clunk is normal...There was a long thread on this subject several months ago.

yeah i think the conclusion on that thread was that different tranny fluid would help but not entirely fix it. Some fluid with the word purple in it if i remember correctly. I think people also said it went away as the car warmed up. but there should be good info on that thread

It wasn't that thread! Paris Pearl was the one who had a clunk, just like my car does...she took her car back several times to the dealer. The service tech guys did hear the clunk too and they said it was normal. In fact they took her husband out for a ride in a couple of new cars on the lot, and they had the clunk too.

I've got the TRD ssk and NST bushing kit... still clunky. The short shifter works great though.

Just wanted to know, does the 2nd xB have the a "cheap" standard transmission too? I found a lot of posts about the first gen xB and xA saying they're made cheap and this and that and using the other transmission fluid. I thought the tC and new xB had better parts since they cost more.

Oh, and to BabBlood, I have the TRD short shifter and I really didn't notice any difference at all other than a different shift ****, but I have an xA, so it could be different for you.

Mine has no clunk or any anoyances. So, it may be normal, but it is not correct.

I have noticed that the drivetrain becomes more clanky the longer I have driven. I was thinking maybe the TRD performance clutch or differential would solve the issue. Basically pushing the customer to upgrade!

The TRD short shifter I believe just has a shorter "stick" (the metal bar your shift **** is attached to" so it does nothing for the transmission. All the clunkiness is from inside the transmission itself I think, so even the performance clutch probably wont do it. I've read on here it has something to do with the "bushings" I don't know too much about the exact parts in a transmission.

The TRD Quick Shifter (a.k.a. "short shifter") has nothing to do with a shorter shift lever, in fact it uses the stock shift lever. It reduces the distance that the shift lever and **** must travel to accomplish each shift.

From the TRDsparks item description:

TRD Quick Shifter reduces shift throw by up to 35% providing a sportier more responsive feel. Machined to precise standards from 7075 billet aluminum. This aluminum has a high strength-to-weight ratio making it the perfect material for high performance driving conditions.
Installs in about 45 minutes with no drilling or special tools required. Uses OE shift lever and ****. For manual transmissions only.

the royal purple helps with the whine associated with the tranny, which you read something i wrote as i've done it, not the clunk that you/i are having. the clunk, from what i've found is the counterbalance (the hammer looking thing that helps when you shift from gear to gear) being sloppy. and no, the short throw shift kit doesn't help (at least not in my case) and is not a rod or shift lever of any sort. it goes under the hood on the drivers side down on the tranny. looking down there (under the intake tract) have a friend shift the car back from 1st to 2nd a few times, you'll see it and should hear the noise thats described. it might not be as audible as the tranny has no load on it. there are shift bushings that you can buy that replace the soft oem rubber ones at the ends of the shifter cables. this might help the problem, but am not sure as i've not tried this yet. i just think this is one of those quirks the xB has. if anyone has had any luck with a fix, get it out there!!!
