moto you just pick up your xb less then about 2000 miles ago. if so i had that type of smell. but went away. even went so far as to park it in the garage or place cloth under the car to see if it was leaking. it is some type of coating they put on the engine. there is a post in this forum about it or the power and drive train.

You are smelling coolant from the vent on the coolant overflow tank.

If you had a leak, you would have to add coolant!

My car has 9980 miles on it and the dealer had the factory come down and check i out. the tested the car for 6hrs and found nothing. the smell even comes inside. the factory said the car checked out 100% and the smell is normal. how thay think this is right i dont know. if i would have known this i would have kept my 06 xb and never wasted a dime on this car. so i might try and lemon law the car and get all my money back and find a older xb

A smell is not enough of an issue to do a lemon law on it. Especially since we all are saying the same thing and the dealer never finds anything wrong on any of ours.

Check Here for your states Lemon Law.

I remember having it at 24,000 miles on my 1st xB2.

2nd xB2 no smells yet. But I'm only 551 miles so far.

Default coolant smell? I think so too

Coolant smell could be hot rubber and plastics, when no leak is found and you know something that smells a lot like coolant is leaking or very hot but no leak is found, right?

If your radiator is leaking a very small amount of coolant up high on the finned surface then it would evaporate before pooling, it might be behind the shroud.

Or the engine bay could be too hot- as mine seemed to be. before I got my Zio MOD.

I made a MOD to help with this SMELL- I call it the ZIO MOD.

Zio

So Zio how much does your MOD cost and is that MOD on a '08 or '09 2nd Gen xB?

I had an '05 xB and LOVED it until this guy in a Ford F-350 decided to turn into me and T-boned my bueatiful xB so I;m in the market for an '09 xB and when I get my settlement with his insurance I plan on purchasing an '09 xB but I've been looking at the posts and searching the internet for any and all things that are wrong with the 2nd Gne xB. When I asked my dealership and the ervice department about this issue of extremely hot engine compartments all they said was that they have not seen anything about this issue and that they get updates as problems are sent out from the manufacturers.

I just don't want to be purchasing a LEMON if there is a problem witht he 2nd Gen xB I would just rather look long and hard for a 1st Gen xB (they seem to get better gas milage even though they don't have the same power as the 2nd Gen xB)!!!

You guys don't read. That coolant smell is a chemical that the Toyota factory coats the engine (metal pieces) in order to prevent rust. After about 5000 or so miles, that chemical fades away naturally. It creates a coolant-like smell when heated.

You can clean it away manually (I did so with some armorall and a microfiber towel.)

My $.02
