Engine problems already, only 2200 miles
I purchased a new 2008 xb in December, have put about 2200 miles on it and I already have something going on with the engine. It has a strange chattering noise to it that gets worse when accelerating. It gets quite loud around 3000-3500rpms. It didn't do this when I first got the car. I owned a 2005 xb before this and never had any issues with it. I'm a little worried that things are already going wrong when I've only owned it a little over a month.
Definitely going to take my car in to get checked but is anyone else having the same issue? Have any ideas what could be causing this?

are you sure it is the engine??? not doubting, but the hood has been an issue for several of us, all it needed was some adjustment of the stops and it goes away.... could be something that simple....good luck either way, sucks to have a new car with problems

Can you describe the sound?
I had a problem recently with my xB at about 3,300 miles. My sound was a high pitched gringing sound. Metal on metal and coming from underneath the engine area. Sounded AWFUL.
At the dealership I was told that the gaurd under the oil pan had come loose and was vibrating something fierce. Not a constant vibration, but very noticable. I was the first owner this had happened to, so they were glad they now knew what to look out for. However, it scared me intially to have such a terrible racket, but relieved once it found to be something simple.
Good luck with your box.

My husband is going to call today and see what he can find out. He is actually a mechanic & he's not quite sure what the noise is. He's checked for anything loose and couldn't find anything. He can hear it under the plastic engine cover. We shall see what Scion says. I'll keep everyone posted.

Have an appt. with a local Toyota dealer on Tuesday. Hopefully they'll figure out what's going on.
I also forgot to mention I'm having problems with brakes as well. It doesn't always happen, but when I'm slowing down to a stop, the brakes pop and give slightly. It sounds and feels like it is coming from the left front side. I had an issue with my old '05 xB with something brake related popping when backing up. My husband lubed everything up on the brakes and it stopped completely. Something was sticking and causing it...don't know if it's the same here.
I guess I'm just really frustrated and disappointed I'm having so many things so soon. I'm to the point I wish I had my '05 back.

Whatever you do, make sure you receive documentation from service for everything you talk to them about and have them look at. Toyota is a very reliable brand, but warranties and lemon laws exist for a reason. Often times service departments will just tell you they couldn't find anything wrong, or that you don't need to sign anything, so that there is no paper trail.
I hope they get it all resolved for you. I have put 6200 miles on mine in the first 3 months without a single issue or noise. (Knocking on wood right now.)
Best wishes.

No, didn't call corporate yet. My husband called the dealership yesterday and spoke with the guy in charge of the service dept. Decided to try the local Toyota dealership first to see what diagnostics say. I guess we'll go from there.

Another question...when my car is running and I have the hood up, the engine makes a ticking noise. Is it supposed to make that noise? Someone told me it was ok and another said it wasn't normal. Still taking it in on Tuesday, but wanted feedback on it.

Sounds to me like the valves, especially if your husband can hear it under the engine cover. That's probably also what you hear ticking when the hood is up. On most cars you can hear the valves with the hood up, but it shouldn't be crazy loud. My VW had 20 valves, talk about ticking!
That's the first thing I thought of when you said chattering an ticking. If it is the valves, they shouldn't be that noticable when your accelerating. Especially from inside the car.
Hope you get it figured out, let us know.
