VIN etching is something you pay extra for, and is usually done after the car is purchased. New OEM glass has no etching, just like when the car came from the factory. Sorry I didn't make that clear earlier.

umm that suck completely. yeah i would guess it was someone ____ed off at the world or something. probably was out with some of his friends and wanted to look cool. good thing is carma will get him one day.

That's usually how it works. Some dealerships etch all the cars when they come on the lot, others wait until you purchase the service when in finance.
At the Acura dealership I worked at, they put it on all the cars when they dropped off the carriers. It takes about 5 min. per car, and doesn't really cost anything. This way if a buyer wanted it, it was already done.
I can't remember the exact benefit details, but it was something like $500-$1000 back if your car was ever stolen, and the cost was something like $200 upon purchase. Just having it also provides the deterrent effect, because a thief knows he won't be able to sell the glass.
