Default has anyone done 3m tape on spoiler?

how well do you think that would hold up the spoiler or just waste of time?

if there's enough contact.. it'll be fine..

but if you're posting about a NG xB... which is the forum you posted in...

then i wouldn't do it with just 3M tape.

also... most spoilers come with 3M tape on top of the bolts and nuts you use... so technically... all spoilers should have 3M tape on them..

I believe that Scionpro is designing a body kit using 3M for all upper components adn bolt on and 3M for underbody!! He might have some input for ya!!

i was very torn when it can to putting my spoiler on.
i didn't like the idea on drilling holes in my car.

but, in the long run i did it. i only drilled 2 holes but i also used some 3M to provent any rattling.
i feel better because i don't have to worry about it, its on, and its not coming off by itself.
ive herd alot of guys say all they used was 3M and they didn't have any problems. i just didn't want to be driving down the highway and see trafic swaring in my rear view mirror to miss my airborn spoiler. that would leed to "a bad day" thread.

Note, tape keeps the object from sliding around, the bolts keep it from falling off. Two different jobs. If you use just bolts, the bolts could loosen and the part slides on the surface causing damage to itself and the car. Tape along keeps the part secure until a force is applied away from the tape. There is no mechanical attachment and the part and car will separate.

Think of it this way: paper bags with handles have a warning on them to only use the handles such that the glue is in sheer (handles above the bag.) If you pull the handle out to the side, the bag tares. It's the same with the tape, great sheering resistant, poor separation resistance.

hmm... the good 3M double sided tape is rated to hold 5 lbs per square inch.

for proper application and usage.. that stuff can hold on a spoiler absolutely fine.

yes... there is mechanical attachment.

I would think, when you get moving on the road, you may have pressure greater than 5lb per sq in on your spoiler.

use the bolts....... that's why they're there.. I mean look at how many holes your car's body has in it already!! 4 more aint going to hurt a bit, AAMOF, if you look under the passanger side of the upper hatch... pull the rubber gromet & you'll see a HOLE!! OMG a hole in my NEW xB that isnt doing anything??? WOW... well guess what?? that hole is there for you to put in a screw & a nut for your FACTORY spoiler... So drill away...
read this thread first....

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...186700&start=0

you'll see 'eight08customs' post there.. read what he has to say about the 08 spoiler & tape only!!

also... 'swartzautoman'.. my neighbor. I see you posted in that thread as welll... you were going to get a first gen spoiler & 'stick' it on your xb2.... did you change your mind?? did that spoiler you got come with studs & screw mounts?? did you cut them off???
Use the bolts & screws... a team of college educated engineers designed it that way for a reason..... 4 more holes arent goon hurt a bit.... you wing could end up killing someone bouncing down the concreete at 70 MPH..... just my 2 cents..... jh

ps.. all you gotta do is make sure you slop some paint on the bare metal you created by drilling.. 2 coats.... good to go..... ..

Ok .. I have been sticking on rear wings on first gens using just 3m tape for many years that the damm thing sticks like glue..

But.. ON the 2nd gens its anouther story.. From Experiance.. I cut off the bolt and just used doublesided tape only..

The Bugga no stick good onthe new scion.. I dont knwo why but it comes loose every month...

From what i noticed is they way that wing actually the tape doesnt catch all the way thorugh.. it only catches on the edges... IF it would catch on the whole surface the bugga would stuck good.

The reason I rather not drill the holes is prob going to change out the wing and yes i am puttingon the rumion wing in which all the mounting hold are diff .. if i had driled those hole i would have had over 6 hole in my trunk..

SO my advice wouldbe to just drill teh holes..

^^ like i had mentioned.. for proper applications the 3M tape alone would do just fine...

but yes.. as marshall stated... the current options for the 2nd-gen xB well... would not be on that list.

drill away man.

I have installed a lot of Body Kits using 3M tape, it's what is used throughout the suto industry but make sure you use 3M BODY tape and also prep the area with 3M prep towels, they are like moistened wipes and come in sealed foil envelopes....

If you use the tape as per instructions along with the Body Tape you'll need a pry bar to get the Kit off

Nice!!!!! Cant wait for body kits to become available for the xB2 besides the 1 or 2 that are out now.. Hey How long did it take for alot of different styles of body kits to become available when the xB1 first come out?? like a year?? or months???.... your ride looks great!! You know I was gonna get one of those.. When I decided to buy one I wanted a new one, & had to get the new style, because they stopped making the old ones, but I still wanted one.. jh

im not shure how long it took for a good selection of body kits to come out for the xB1. mine is a 06.5 so i didn't do any real serious research untill i got mine home.

my spoiler was not a smooth transaction. i hade to have the hole thing sanded down and a fresh coat of resin put on it befor i could get it painted. the buy that made it knew nothing about fiberglass and tried to hide it with fill and primer.
but im very happy with the finished product and the look, and i would do it the same way again if i hade to.
