How much gas/miles are left when the gas light comes on?

Usually the light comes on around 11 gallons used, so 3 remain.

By the time I fill-up if I do wait for the light, it always takes around 11.4 gallons.

My gas light comes on when the trip computer says I still have 20-22 miles left to zero. When I fill up at +/- zero, it still only takes about 12 gallons.

Ive gone 60 miles on 0 range took 13.9 gallons to fill it up after that. I think I was right at the limit. I guess if you were a hyper miler you coul probably get 100 on 0 range. I just averaged 19.8 MPG on the last tank. That was all highway coming back from phoenix. A/C Full blast 106 outside cruise on at 90 with occasional blasts to 105+

We have to drive fast out west. They managed to spread the citys out instead of building up. Phoenix is nearly 100 miles east to west with all of the continuously conected burbs. It also helps to live in an enviroment that never freezes; the pavement is perfect it begs to be driven fast on.

Finally Someone that agrees with me. It always drives me crazy when some midwestern license plated car is on the freeway going 65 MPH and everyone is flying around them

the NYC suburbs extend thru NJ and into PA and we have our share of people who "have" to go 90+.....they will not run you over.

Well, I can't quite understand how some have gotten 31 mpg and others are getting 19? Their driving habits must be at opposite ends of the spectrum. I almost always get between 25 and 27 no matter how I drive but my driving style is neither passive or aggressive. As usual, many people from the east and west coasts somehow think that people from the heartland are some sort of country bumpkins who still use outhouses and have no electricity. Guess what? The world does not revolve around New York and California.

The best I've gotten was 330's, and that was driving all highway, from D.C. to Pittsburgh. I mainly drive city with working 10 mins from home. Light comes on with about 20 or so miles on range with the needle right before E. I have taken the range to 0 (zero) a couple times but haven't pushed it past that. Even with mainly driving city miles I am averaging 26-28 mpg's. My avg on highway is about 32-34mpg's.

I am only getting about 240 from a tank and trying to take it easy. I drive mainly around the city though with very few highway miles.

However, I drove the new TDI Jetta this week with the DSG transmission and I know for sure I've found my next car.
They are building a sportwagon and the TDI drives amazing!
Lot's of torque and the DSG tranny shifts incredible. I was laughing with the salesman because I was amazed at how well it accelerated for a diesel!
Some people are getting as much as 50 highway with that car!
They only start at 23k so, later next year I'm going to try and get one.

I've always wondered how Ohio became part of the heartland or mid-west...America is 3000 miles wide and Ohio is 400 miles from the coast. Don't get me wrong, I love OH...home to some of my favorite coasters.

back on topic...I took a trip into lower manhattan yesterday and my gas mileage plummeted. AC and traffic took it's toll, that half a tank only got me a 25.7 average.

Yeah but then you're stuck with a Volkswagen and you don't want that.

Here's my daily commute on the way to work, which is all city:

11.8 miles
2 stop signs
24 traffic lights
It takes about 22-25 minutes for me to get to work
Speed limit tops off at 45mph, but several parts of it I do 55-60. I like to punch it when I'm first in line at the light so it's like not I'm really easy on it.

On the way home it's 80% highway:

19.8 miles
3 stop signs
5 traffic lights
It takes anywhere from 25-33 mintues to get home
Speed limit is 65 for about 15 miles that I'm on the freeway in which I do 70-75.

I wish people would quit driving 90 on the HWY. it is not safe. period. grow up and realize life is fragile. There are so many idiots here in Texas that drive way too fast in way too large of a car. And im with you, going fast is fun but i know better than to do so.

once you brake it slows you down, then you need to gas it to get back up to speed... Reading the road/traffic and coasting help...

exactly. Anticipate exit ramps. When approaching a green light in the distance that you know will be red by the time you get there, coast. Less brake = less gas.

I think braking less is the wrong way to state this. What you are trying to do is coast more. That means no brake no gas. and shift to neutral in a manual. So you use the deceleration of coasting to stop instead of the brakes. Some people misunderstand this and try to downshift to slow down instead of using brakes but that doesnt do anything. so just coast more.
