Default Hey guys, I finally got my new xB.

I've been driving it smoothly for awhile now, and it's got around 300 miles on it. Now I wonder, when is the best recommended time to change your oil for the first time? I'm assuming I should just use standard "dino" oil and not synthetic. I get a lot of mixed responses so I'm hoping to see if I can get a clear one in this thread. Is it 500? Is it 650? Is it 1000? Or do I just not change it until 5000?

Oh, and here's a picture!

The first Two oil changes are FREE from your dealer, use whatever they give you then use what you want when you pay for it! Welcome aboard! Nice color.

The free oil changes were not mentioned to me. How can I verify that?

The free oil changes were mentioned to me, although I do not know when I should do them. Any ideas?

It is stated in your Scion manual.

I thought my dealer told me 5 and 10,000 were free and they threw in a coupon for one at 1000, but when I got it done at 5000 (different dealership), they told me about 15,000. Maybe you can call your dealership or the one you will be using for your oil changes.

Its 3 free does not matter how many miles you have or when you do it. toyota recomends 5k, 10k, 15k miles thats what i did, then I started to do my own Mobile1 5w-30and Mobile1 filter every 5k miles.

Just to clarify things: 2006 & below you receive (3) FREE Oil changes which can be found in your "Owner's Manual" and for 2008 and above, you receive (2).

Yes you can find the free oil changes information in the maintenance log book/manual provided.

So if I get it correctly, you're supposed to change at 5k for your first oil change? The answer still isn't clear to me.

Yes, if you read your scheduled maintanence guide that is included with your owner's manual and other books in the zippered book holder they give you, the guide runs every 5000 miles. Some people still do a first oil change at 1000 and every 3000, but honestly, all Toyota vehicles run on the 5000 schedule now and do not need the "break in" 1000 oil change.

And yes, the first two changes are free. There should also be a flier that says that in there somewhere. Your dealer's service dept may also have some signage to that effect as well. If you're worried, just call to confirm.

If you don't need the break-in 1000 oil change, does the car even need to be broken in? (Sorry for a lot of questions, but this is another question that has tons of answers that makes the real answer an uncertain one)

First congrats on the new xB.

Yes it does.
It's in the manual.

Not giving you a hard time, but you should read the manuals for the car thoroughly first. Then if you still have questions try asking.

FWIW
One reason I suggest you read the official information first is that even after you have read the manual and come here to ask a question don't assume you are getting the correct answers every time. Look for answers with references to reliable sources..

Just some friendly advice to help you sort through these kinds of questions. I hope you find it helpful.

Fromtheold brother, I like your name, I too seem to be from the oldschool and would never let a new motor go 5000 miles on the same oil! I personally have 2100 miles on my RS and i figure i'd have them doit at 2500 or less when i'm gettin the spoiler installed, LOL. I'm going to do that with dino oil for 10-15,000 miles then go to M1 oil and filter (Mobil1) You can usually run that synthetic for the 5000 miles that Toyota and other manufacturers claim... but i still have this auto maintnence possesive and end up changing it about every 3500 miles.I was taught at a young age you can never change your oil enough and its the best preventive maintenence on a motor...That's my opinion!

I too use to change my oil every 3k miles in my truck... Granted it was a 15 year old V8 with 175k miles on it and dirtys oil like a baby dirtys it diaper... But these new 4bangers are way better on oil, so every 5k should be fine...
