How to remove 3M double-sided tape in a very tight spot???
Maybe I should've post this in the ICE/interior section, but this is a fairly generic question that I think would get more responses in the Owner's Lounge...
The crossovers for my front component speakers are stuck to the inside of the door panel (metal) with double-sided tape. I wasn't thinking too much when I installed them almost a year ago. There is a switch on the crossover that lets you attenuate the tweeters by 3 or 6 dB. I have that switch butted up against the horizontal door beam that's supposed to reinforce the door for crahses
I want to take the crossovers out so I can get to that switch but that tape is stroooooong! Any ideas on how to remove it? I don't want to try prying it off since the metal that they're attached to is also the outside sheet metal. I wouldn't want to ding up the panel .
Who's had good success with removing this tape with minimal force? Should I try to soak the tape with WD-40? Should I apply heat? Maybe I can use fishing line or dental floss to sort of "saw" it off?
Any ideas or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the reassurance. I was thinking that fishing line would be a best bet. I also just remembered seeing these pocket saws when i was buying camping gear a few weeks ago. If it's thin enough to fit between the door panel and the crossover I think we have a winner.

That pocket saw is about 1mm thick, and the cable blade has very sharp little thorn-like teeth over the entire length. It will scrap the he11 out of whatever it rubs against as you move it back & forth to cut through.
Just about any good camping supply store carries them, if you want to see one in person before buying.

hmmm... so maybe that pocket saw is a little too aggressive, but I wouldn't care too much if I scrathed the inside of the door or the crossover itself. I actually did see them at REI. I bet Wally World should have them too. I'm going to try dental floss first and see how that goes.

Dental floss, or like what someone else has mentioned, fishing line.
Why on the exterior door skin (but obviously on the inside of the door)?!?! I have mine on the outside sheet metal frame on the bottom towards the latch. There's plenty of room there, if you decide to move it. :D

I'll probably move the crossovers to a nicer spot like you suggested.

I know what you mean! I'm still a little leary of water getting in mine, but I doubt it ever will. I have 2 little screw holes for mine to be mounted. I just used some self tappers and took care of business.
They vibrate a little on some certain bass notes.

i've tried using a hair drier and heat themup then use a fishing line to pull it off. it comes out much easier. i also use this method to remove my rear embles.
this method works best when your car is sittin in the sun for a few hours.

Customizing is so tempting i have had my xb for 4 days and i was swapping things out On you question on the double use heat and look for a plastic body spreader thats the best bet . Put a towel against the door panel too.

I already did what I needed to do. I was able to get to the switch by prying open the crossover cover and using a long thin stick to flip the switch to -3dB. First I tried to use the dental floss but it kept breaking. I had no fishing line so I had to find another way. I would have tried heat next, but I din't need to go that far in the end.
