Get a 2011, the small improvents are worth it. I sat in one at the State Fair last weekend and it made me wanna trade in my 08 lol.
The front seats are quite an improvement (they hug you MUCH better and dont feel like you are sitting on a bench like the pre '11s), the guage cluster and interior fabric is nicer looking and the front end has a very agressive look to it. Also I liked the rear tails with the integrated reverse lights.

I have a xB 2010 but I had to take it to the dealer for some aftermarket work and they gave me a 2011 loaner.
Things I liked about the 2011:
1. The armrest. I was content with armrest in my car, but the armrest is sooooo much better in the 2011. And you can actually store things in it.
2. The seats. Definitely a bit more plush than mine.
3. The rear bumper. I prefer the integrated lights.
Things I don't like about the 2011:
1. Not really feeling the new grill.
2. The temperature gauge was missing from the dash. Maybe not so important for some but I like to know that information.
Overall, the 2011 seems like a nice ride. The main reason I didn't purchase one was because I got a pretty good deal on the 2010 with a bit more features I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I really like my 2011. Mine has the temperature guage, just above the clock on the dash. I really prefer the feel of the new seats and console and like the look of the redesign. I drove an xB1 before I got this, and I couldn't go with something with such little power. The xB2 is the right blend of power and economy in my opinion...I regularly get in the high 20s/low 30s with mine. Good luck going forward, and just remember that ultimately it's your opinion that counts since you'll have to live with it every day.

If I had to do it all over again, I would NOT!
When my '06 xb was totaled I went down and picked up an '09.
I should have found a used 1st gen...
The gas mileage trade off is the killer for me. I used to average mid to high 30's in the '06. In the '09 I get low to maybe mid 20's. Major suckage imho.

I test drove a few competitors and ended up with an xB2. I tested out the Kia Soul, the Nissan Cube and the Mazda5. The Cube was waaaay underpowered and very windy above 55 mph. Very roomy interior though. The Mazda5 was very practical but boring and had cheap interior plastic. I liked the Soul but the interior scratches very easily and it's awful over bumps. It's also underpowered. The xB2 felt the most stable, it was the quietest, had the most power and gets the best resale value. I also liked the looks and has tons of interior space.

I owned an 06' xB it was fun, it was quaint and had it's own personality. It got T-boned, and alas totalled out, I got back from my insurance 9/10 of what I ended up paying for my certified used 08' xB. Only had 3k miles on it and it is fully loaded. I love the bigger engine, yes it's not as fuel efficient as the first gen, but come on... it's nearly twice the size of the first gen engine, of course you're gonna lose some of the economic value. It has a lot more room (playing in a band my car came in handy! Two large guitar amps, my drum kit, and a couple of guitars)... yes... roomier. And being 6'2" It is extremely comfortable for me... I have nothing but good things to say about my 08. Now... as for the 2011? I have no clue. That's my two cents.

I have one of each generation. 2005 RS 2 and a 2010 RS 7. Love the extra room of the 2nd gen. My son took the 1st gen to college. Each has its pro's and con's. But I am happy with both. Wife will drive the Purple 2nd gen but hates to drive the Yellow 1st gen. Just a color thing with her. Plus it is way under powered compared to her Highlander. For economy, 1st gen., for space and comfort, 2nd gen. But in the end, it is your decision.

Personally if you can afford it I would get the new release series xb 8.0 and paint it a diff color! factory Moon Roof . If my 08 was worth more I thought about trading it in for a 2011, I like the new front bumper.....
