New 08 xB - is it normal to have a burning smell when I park
Hi,
It has 61 miles on it. When I pull it into the garage and close the door I smell a burning smell. Is this normal from the exhaust being new or something?
Thanks,
Alan

I know with German cars that a substance known as cosmolene (sp?) is sprayed all over the underbody of the car, exhaust, and motor to prevent oxidation when transported from Europe to the States. I don't know if Japanese car companies, or Scion, do that to their cars for transport, but I am willing to bet that they do. I wouldn't be to worried about it. Cosmolene usually takes anywhere from 500-1000 miles to be totally "baked" off, but is usually gone much sooner than that...that is probably what you are smelling.

Hi,
Thanks for the info guys, sounds like it is fairly normal. I took it for a ride tonight to the store and it averaged 28.1 mpg overall. Much better than the 18 I was getting in my old car. I really like this xB, the more I drive it the more I love it.
Thanks,
Alan

Hi,
alank2 your messages have a very "corporate" setup. Nothing wrong with that though. Just thought it was kind of funny.
Thanks,

Sorry to bump this, but I wanted to answer and ask a question.
I too get the burning smell still. I noticed it when I first bought the vehicle. All of the xb's I tried (for color and accessory differences) had the smell. The dealer told me it'd wear off in a hundred miles or so (actually he said 30 but I took it with a grain of salt). Now, 3600+ miles and 45 days later I still smell the burning - though not as often and primarily when I idle (though I get it when driving sometimes too).
So I'm wondering. Could the smell be "stuck" in my air filter sitting behind the glove compartment? I didn't really think about it until now, so I've never taken it out and sniffed it. But could it explain the residual burn smell?
However, you'd think I'd get it at the same level of smell whether or not I'm moving. But I don't. It seems more prevalent when Idling. Which leads me to believe it's still coating something and hasn't all burned off yet.

Make sure you haven't been driving the car with the BRAKE on. ;)
Like everyone above tho, it's normal, I had the same. If you hit 1k miles though and you still smell it... def have it checked out at Scion services, and if there is a genuine defect problem with it, it's gotta be covered under standard manufacturer warranty, so no worries.
