poor gas mileage

If you want to start small, try uping the tire pressure in the tires, add some Chevron fuel injector cleaner, and wax your car haha.

The first thing I added on my xB was the CAI and my mileage went up about 2-3 mpg so it is definitely a benefit. Then I added wheel s and larger tires which added weight and it dropped it down. I average about 26 mpg city/hwy mix. I also am not a heavy accelerator. I consider that pretty good overall.
Also keep in mind that the xB, and as I understand it toyotas in general, only take a little over 11.5 gallons of fuel to fill up on a 14 gallon tank so you are really only getting the mileage of 11 gallons.
I came from a car that had a larger fuel tank and am used to my tank lasting longer so it is taking me time to adjust to having to fill up sooner, even though it is costing me less.

no, the xb2 tank is 14 the light comes on around 11. People buythese things thinking xb must mean fuel saver because of the first gens. Your talking an over ton and a half vehicle with a big a$$ 2.4 I-4. Even 28 avg. MPG mixed driving is pretty darn good.Hey, I'll admit i got real spoiled with my 1st gen as well but figured its just the way it is...goshdarned terrorists and they're overpriced oil...

I know they are 14 g. and the light comes on around 11, but I am one of these people that does not like to take a chance once the light comes on. I think one of these days I will take my little one gal. fuel jug with me when I get low and drive and see how far I can go once the light comes on.

i go by the MPG in the computer...since not all the pumps are calibrated the same, and things like temp can affect back pressure in the tank.
at any rate, I try to pay more attention to the avg MPH and how it relates to avg MPG. Even though I do a lot of highway driving, my avg MPH is never above 40mph, and can be as low as 30mph. with it being that low, I can understand why my gas mileage avg is usually 25-27mpg. For every 10 miles of highway driving, I do about 1 mile of grueling inner city traffic. that will destroy any car's mileage. so I'm happy.

I got my new xB in mid July and took it on a road trip to Atlanta-Florida then back to Dallas Tx and was getting close to 35mpg there and back. Then again I have the 19" wheels, TRD intake, and TRD exhaust so that helped a lot.

curtisc.... I wouldn't worry too much with the mileage thus far... you are only part way into the break in period for the engine and trans. With my first tC and now my brand new 08 that only has 800 miles on it so far... that once they are broken in... they actually get better gas mileage than toyota/scion rates them at. With my 06 tC after it was broken in... I never dropped below getting 32mpg and that was with intake, headers, and exhaust. Plus the new B is much larger than the 1st gen. give it a little time and it'll get better.

18.5 mpg average here.. 1100 miles mainly city driving, los angeles, and 25 mins freeway a day.
Im actually really disappointed with this, as I dont push the car hard at all. Lots or red lights and hills im taking all the time though.
My 2006 beamer 325 ci was getting an average of 23 on the same route, and I know the fuel rating changed last year, but hey, im very dissapointed.. I know I wasn't getting a super efficient car, but its way under performing atm..
Must be missing something..

I was reading the other day that people generally get worse milage if they travel less than 7 miles a trip.... Home to work for me is about 5, so maybee that causes it a little.
I reset the meter yesterday after my post, ive got 19 atm. If i could average 22 id be happy, heh
cheers

Cold weather and frequent short trips can reduce fuel economy, since your engine doesn't operate efficiently until it is warmed up. In colder weather, it takes longer for your engine to warm, and on short trips, your vehicle operates a smaller percentage of time at the desired temperature. Note: Letting your car idle to warm-up doesn't help your fuel economy, it actually uses more fuel and creates more pollution.

Those tires will have an effect as well. I went up to 17'' as well with 225/45/17. That sucked down 2-3 mpg from my average. you went even bigger than I did, which means you added more weight and more resistance.
