I, too, was agonizing about the lack of decent mileage numbers, so I asked fellow xB owners. Seems the car is so computerized it has to learn the way you drive and adjusts to you. I was told that it would take at least four, maybe five tanks before I got any numbers at all. Then I was told that it would be 5,000 miles before the numbers. What I concluded is that you drive the way you drive and the car does what the car does. Mileage is important, but so are the other features I bought this car to get. I'll be patient. On the third tank, it was 13.5. On the fourth, it was 18.4, so it's coming on up like it's supposed to do...I think.

 

Its real complicated isnt it? You first got the engine and if auto, the tranny to break in. Then you got the computer to learn how you drive. You too have to feel the car out, find the shift points if manual. I had a friend with a car computer from snap on. He said you can change anything, including the shift points in an auto tranny. In my fuel economy experience as someone who can get and exceed the epa numbers, its basically about giving the engine the least amount to workof gas to do the work.

With my xa manual tranny, the key shift point was 3500rpms. If under hard aceleration even higher to 4200 or the max of the torque band. Any more fuel economy took a nose dive. Engine braking was another key, then of course not warming or cooling the car down, just driving it.

My advice, use the instant mpg read out. Do not use the cruse control as it lowers fuel economy. Thats basically the same read out you get with a scan guage that helps people get better fuel economy. If you are shifting at the correct rpms, the fuel economy with read the same or go up, if it dips, you short shifted or shifted too early.

I want to try a tank manualy shifting the tranny, I think the auto short shifts at first you roll off, then its quick to upshift if needed.

 

Im with the guy above me. Ive never had air conditioning in my car so ive only used it 2 times since i had it. Its been cold lately so through town my windows are down and on the highway i keep em up but still bad gas milage and it seems im always filling her up!

 

Well, when I drove to wva and back doing 74 mph the whole way, I got 28 mpg. Thats through the grades, slopes and only stopping to fill up at 3/4 used as some areas stops were far and too few inbetween. I was filling up every few hours, but it kept up with the other suvs and passenger trucks on the road. I had fun passing the compacts and big semi trucks. Sure my xa got 40mpg, but I would be with them waiting to climb the hill in 2ns gear at 5 grand.

 

Wow, I guess my wife is doing pretty good then. She's only got 400 miles on her '09 and the first tank of gas yeilded 24.6 mpg(100% commuter miles). I keep track of the gas mileage of any car that I get, and since my name is on the paper work with my wife's, I'm keping track of it.

 

My XB was getting 30 mpg right from the start in a trip to Florida with four people and luggage. I've had it for 5 months now and my average is right about 29 mpg. I do 70-75 on the freeway and I use the A/C heavily in the summer. My daily commute is probably 35% city and 65% highway.

 

I have 500 miles on my xb, and I'm getting about 20 mpg 95% city driving. I use ethanol gas, maybe I need to use just regular unleaded to improve

 

Ethanol rich gas gets less economy. Really 500 miles is too early to tell. when you get 3000 miles, thats a good indication.

Just take it easy, accelerat slow and smoothly. I am just happy getting 245 per fill up. It seemed I was always filling up my xa as it had a smaller tank.

 

22.3 thats all I get for a average.

 

I usually average 29-32mpg but lately it's been a bit lower because I have been driving quite aggressively to and from work, haha. Still getting 27-29 though, lol.

I think my engine was made on a Wednesday and those with horrible numbers... Friday... Friday...

i have 42,000 miles, (yes 42,000 miles) on my xb.

yesterday i drove 600 miles averaging 31 mpg going 75 mph.

my fuel mileage changes all the time. sometimes i get 28-29 sometimes i can pull 32 or 33 mpg. i think it depends on the ethanol content of the fuel you use, like someone said earlier. i seem to get better mileage out of lower ethanol % fuel.

 

I use to draft a lot with the xa and could go any speed if I could draft someone and still get 40+mpg. I recall reading my scan guage on i295 one day, I was using like 4 gallons per hour or some high number, yet my mpg was 42 and I was doing 80 or 90 following a semi truck.

Needless to say this xb 2 is a magnet for rocks and other road debri, so I dont do that now a days.
