Default rear window

So i have a 2008 Scion XB. My fiance was driving to work yesterday mourning and all of a sudden the back window shattered. She was on the free way traveling 55 to 60 miles an hour. I went and picked up the vehicle and took it to the dealership and they immediately told me that it wasnt covered under warranty. they told me that a rock or something hit it. I honestly dont think that a rock can hit that back window and shatter it. with the angle of the window and the speed. the car has a rear spoiler that is mainly for looks. but i know that it has to be sending a stream of air down that back end of her car right against the window. the dealer told me that if the door or window flexed at all that the glass would have blown out. but i talked to some people and they claim that it would have created a vacume either way it was hit, from the inside or outside. They also told me that this would have happened the first day we drove it off the light not 22,000 miles later. but i also disagree with this because opening and closing that back door a thousand or so times we have had the car could have shifted something i think. I also think that they might be using a less quality glass or something because i have been reading about a lot of cracked windshields, which we have also had. ive had to replace it once and filled two or three cracks now. I have never got a crack on my truck or anything. what the hell is wrong with this car.
anyone else have a problem with their back window? What do you think i should do? bug the dealer or just get it fixed myself?

thanks

the reason your windshield keep getting chips is because you drive a xb, not because its cheap glass. your car is not very aerodynamic.

if your dealer wont fix the rear glass call your insurance company.

You need to call your insurance company about the rear window. It is not a glass problem. It is a "something probably hit it" problem - and unless you had some strange proof otherwise, that's all it'll ever be. Sorry for the hassle you've had, but there's really not much anyone can say about it.

Be lucky you don't have a tC and have the sunroof or wind deflector randomly shatter and spray glass all over you from above.

Yeah, The back window wont just shatter unless something has hit it or the rear hatch itself has shifted shape in which case your hatch wouldn't close properly.

I would say a rock was thrown from the top of a tire, which would launch it forward, and broke your rear hatch window.

If i remember correctly this was an issue on the toyota highlander as well.
My exp is good luck getting the dealer to do anything about it might want to try another dealer or call the 1800 number for scion.
As far a a car/truck pitching a stone off the top and forward i could only see that happening from a 18 wheeler/dump truck as on 99% of cars the front wheels are contained in the fenders.
A more likely cause is weld splatter or something causing a point in the window sealing surface to be higher.
And make sure your sitting when you get the price for the glass my guess is 700+ in parts alone

Good luck and keep us posted

Hmm, I agree with what you're saying, but something to note. You would agree that it breaking because of a vacuum is more than unlikely, and there is a much greater chance that something hit it? Well, thinking back to my destructive years, i learned that you only need a small amount of force for a small object to shatter the rear window. Honestly, a rock probably entered through the front window at that perfect angle to hit the rear windsheild.

Sorry for the loss, but yeah, probably should contact insurance (of course, if your deductible is equal to or more than the cost of replacement, might as well not contact insurance).

A LOT of policies will have $0 deductible for glass replacement. I know mine does. You might have to specifically choose that though. And it should cost next to nothing extra - so if you don't have that coverage, I'd look into it.

I would not have suggested the rock off the top of the tire had I not read this.

Maybe you missed it the first time you read the OP.

I've seen it happen before which is why I suggested it.

Is it the back hatch window or the back seat window. If it was the hatch window don't think a rock could really hit it while going forwards never heard or seen that happen. no maybe the back seat window maybe a rock from a car going by or something but still hard to believe LOL!!! Never has happened to me on eathier window.

Default Shattered Rear Window

Actually, this happened to me today. No rock. No crack in rear window. I know, because I had run several errands and opened the hatchback several times (I have a Scion 2008 TC). Drove to empty spot in front of my home to park. Shifted into park, and there's a pop that scared the bejeebers out of me and all I see is a window of cracked glass. Nothing came through the window. I looked outside -- nothing was on the ground. I took my groceries in the house and immediately drove to my Toyota dealership. They said they'd never heard of such a thing happening, but they suggested I file an insurance claim, and if the glass specialists discover that the shattering was a defect in the vehicle, then the insurance company will follow up with Toyota.

My claims agent is the one who suggested I Google "Scion rear window shattering." Apparently, he had heard of some cases where random glass shattering had occurred in Scions. Anyway, I have had a rock hit my front windshield and all I got was a crack. In this case with my rear window, the entire window shattered, yet no glass actually fell anywhere until I got out of my car and closed the door. There is no physical object that can cause that much damage witout landing in the backseat of the car or on the ground below the rear of the car. Nothing did. I'm very lucky, after being on major roads and highways all day, that it didn't happen until I was safely at home parking.

Have you yelled at any neighbor kids recently?
They can be very accurate with BB guns.
