Default Scion 'optomize' warranty-friendly?

hello guys n gals -

first off, nice site! there seems to be no shortage of Scion forums out there, but i definitely dig the vibe here the most.

anywho, i just picked up my 09 xB last Monday. like most of us, i like to play with my vehicle, so the idea of being able to put on toys i want and NOT void the warranty was a HUGE selling point for me (obviously talking about TRD parts). but, the warranty itself was a big selling point, too. the dealership i bought it from offers a lifetime powertrain warranty on all their new vehicles at no extra cost. so, as you can see, there's a fine line i'd like to walk between having fun with my car and keeping it warranty-friendly.

but, checking on Scion's site, i see a section called Scion Optomize that seems to be promoting aftermarket parts from companies like Borla, 5-Axis, Lund. etc. my question is, since Toyota/Scion are the ones pushing these things, would you think it likely for me to have issues with warranty concerns later on?

and just to be clear, i've been modding cars for a good while now. i'm well aware of the legalities of adding aftermarket goodies (Magnusson Moss Act, etc.), but i also know that a dealership can still make your life hell if they want to and i'd rather just avoid the headache whenever possible.

you can always buy most aftermarket stuff and have the dealers install and not void the warranty. I just put headers on our company tundra (non trd headers) 6" pro comp lift pro comp ladder bars, pro comp sway bars and a few other things. usualy i would do it all myself but brand new truck i aswell didnt want to void warranty so soon so i had them install it to keep he warrenty. Id call a few dealers before you have them install it. ex. one dealer wanted $1650 for install of the super charger in the tundra but we took it to another dealer and they charged $850 for the install.

not to argue, but how does having a dealership install the parts ensure my warranty is OK?

its to "ensure" that it was installed "correctly". also another way for dealers to take money from us

Just having the dealer install your parts doesnt ensure anything.

Toyota's Vehicle Service Agreement states:
"All Manufacturer-original equipment parts installed by the manufacturer or your selling dealer are covered under this agreement for mechanical failure, unless otherwise excluded..."

Exclusions:
1.2 "Failure caused by modifications or parts not authorized or supplied by the vehicle manufacturer or Administrator."

Even if your dealer is an authorized dealer for things like Borla exhaust, your factory/extended warranty wont cover it. Those warranties would be with the dealer and related company. Make sure that you get a copy of their warranty with whatever you buy!

To clear it up, the answer is No, the products you see on Optomize Scion are not covered by Scion's warranty.

These aftermarket parts and accessories are not Genuine Scion or Toyota Parts and Accessories and are warranted by their respective (third party) manufacturer and/or distributor. These aftermarket parts and accessories are NOT warranted by Warren Distribution, Inc. or Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. ("TMS") or its Scion department.
Although these parts are purchased from a Scion dealer, we do not cover them under the factory warranty.

Hope that clears it up!!

the parts arent warrantied but by having the dealer install a product for you wont viod the warranty. ex 07 tundra super charger we just had them install. if i was to install it and i blow the motor later on they wont cover that. but if since i had them install it and later down the line i blow the motor it is covered under warranty both motor and sc.

but let's say your new supercharger causes your tranny to blow with all the power you're now putting down. are you suggesting that just because the dealership put the SC in, they would cover your tranny under Toyota's factory warranty?

Jen, thanks for the clarification.

is it a TRD supercharger? if so, i can see it, but otherwise i'd have to say that either

a) you have the most awesome dealership in the world

or

b) they blew smoke right up your bum

based on my experiences with dealerships, i would most definitely lean towards the latter.

No Problem
As for the supercharger question--unless it is a TRD supercharger and installed by the dealer, it would NOT be covered under factory warranty.
If a dealership sells and installs an aftermarket part, the warranty on that part and any components it affects would then be from the manufacturer of the aftermarket part and the warranty from the installing dealer (If they have one), but it certainly would not be under Toyota's factory warranty.
