Default Someone who knows Subs

I have a question for someone who knows something about sub enclosures.

If I'm building a sealed enclosure, does volume matter? I have a great idea but it'll mean that my 8" sub will have very little volume behind it. I'm not concerned with sound levels, just quality. I don't want it to sound horrible.

Thoughts?

you should look at the specs provided by the sub manufacturer. They usually call out a certain volume that the sub will work well in.

of course it matters. too small and it sounds bad, too big and it sounds bad. your best bet is to follow the specs provided by manu.

also make sure you provide enough depth. if the space between magnet and enclosure is too small, the sub may overheat or just sound like crap (friend has this problem and it sounds like he has paper vibrating inside the enclosure because he doesnt have enough depth).

The volume always matters. Most new 8" subs require very little air space so you might be able to make your box and have your sound too.

Oh how tragically sad. I was going to do something special. There actually could be plenty of volume but very little depth behind the magnet. Is the only concern with depth heating? I could cool it in other ways.

Does that make more sense? I could cool the magnet if the only concern is heat.

I mean if the volume is right it should work right? Even if the depth isn't great?

It will prob be fine but I still think it will sound like p00p. You should come to one of the MA ScioNRG meets, You can listen to my friend's system. It looks great and sounds ok except the whole vibrating paper thing, lol.

I'm going to go with a traditional triangular sealed enclosure. Probably just as easy to make but a less risky design.

How deep is that box? There are tons of shallow mount subs out right now. The Clarion got a better rating than the Pioneer in CA&E a few months back, and JL is coming out with one soon. Elemental designs also has one.

anyway, check with whoever you get sub from, but you may only need 3/4 inch space behind sub. And you probably don't want to do the fan.

S sub is designed to move air, and if you put a fan inside a sealed box you may create some air movement issues
