What do you think would be a good price for this xB?

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/ctd/1669253516.html

Clean carfax and autocheck. The guy says it was returned on a lease, but he runs a little rink-dink lot. I'm kinda wondering why the dealer wouldn't have kept this for themselves if it's such a great car...

I was thinking 14K?

Those aren't "premium factory wheels" like their ad says, they're cheap after-market wheels. I'm thinking $13k-$13,500 is a little more reasonable.

It also says that it has the premium pioneer deck and the one in there is the base model.

I bought mine new for 16.5K in NewEngland. Prices may vary a little bit, but it's two years old and already has 14K. if it has tonly the base warentee then it's half over. I'd re-consider and buy new, Else only offer 12 maybe...

Anyone know what the KBB has it rated at?

KBB is virtually useless, it always inflates the values.

In excellent condition they give the following values:
Retail = $17,430 - not gonna happen
Private Party = $15,330 - not gonna happen
Trade-In = $13,425 - not gonna happen

Thanks.

Do you guys think I should be concerned with why this is not on a dealer's lot?

I mean, usually the way this works is the dealership takes in cars, or gets them back on lease, and the good ones they keep for themselves to sell as "used" -- the not so good ones go to auctions for other used car dealers to buy at whole sale.

Why wouldn't a dealership want to keep a 1 year old xB in awesome shape??

Am I being too paranoid?

I had the dealer check the VIN for a history of warranty work and there hasn't been a single thing, so that sounds like a good sign.

This car probably did not come off lease, it's been too short a time period. The person who leased it must have used it as a trade-in on another vehicle, and that car lot would have then bought out the lease to take it in trade. I don't know this for sure, but when I was an auto sales consultant we often bought people out of their current lease to sell them a new car.

Admittedly, there are a lot of people that do not function like me, but why would someone trade or lease a car for 1 year? That would be crazy-expensive, wouldn't it?

Again, I'm just naturally suspicious that something might be wrong with the car. But maybe I'm just too paranoid (or maybe I've been screwed too many times)... heh.

i say go new. I bought a brand new 2010 xB and couldn't be happier. I mean...think about it:

1.Wether you debate it for weeks, the car got 14k miles.
2.Out of those 14k, you were never there to see how the previous owner drove the car
3. Even Carfax reports could be wrong. There is such a thing as a 'dirty carfax' which means that even those have flaws.

Buying new will ensure that the car has not been tinkered with. If you can't swing new, buy from Carmax or someone who will give you a warranty. Also, you can extend vehicle warranty (if the vehicle has a pre-existing one) as far as I know.

But this is my $0.02 . Good luck out there!

With you on that, better off new. You'll pay a bit more, but you'll be absolutely sure the car is in perfect working order etc...

Yeah, I hear ya. New would be nicer for sure - I'd know the entire history. But if I could save 4K... that's a lot of money.

Plus, right now I'm only working 10 minutes from where I live -- so some part of me is having a hard time justifying needing a brand new car.

And I've got about 2500 - 4000 worth of upgrades earmarked after I purchase it. Sounds like a lot, but even after all that the car would look mostly stock.
  • 16 or 17 inch rims $??
  • Tint front windows and and front windshield $200?
  • Stereo $300?
  • Speakers $200?
  • Possibly amp (alpine makes this "add on" amp I was considering) $120
  • At least some sound deadening for the doors $??
  • Perhaps a custom fit sub (to hug the wheel well) for the back. $300-600?
  • Clear bra $500-700?
  • Floor mats ?
  • Rear spoiler $200?
  • Maybe an alarm (possibly paging alarm)
  • Maybe the optional rear sway bar
  • Maybe a temp gauge
  • Tanbe springs -- $400 installed?

All of the mods are kinda small ticket items. (nothing over a 1K). I'd still go new, given that the new price loan vrs the used will be close to the same (not much more than 50$ a month probably). Most banks offer better intrest on New vrs used. and unless your buying 100% cash, that mod money is still not in your hands, and it'll be hard trying to convince the bank to give you an extra 4 grand on the loan so you can Mod the used car that they technically own till you pay it off...

Actually you can get a used car loan at a new car rate, if the car is less than 18 months old.

I'd probably finance 6-8K of the purchase and the rest would be cash.

I'll go look at the used one tomorrow, if it hasn't been bought yet, and see if he'll take a good price. After talking it over with everyone here, it sounds like 13500 should be the absolute most I should pay. I"ll start negotiating at $13000. I'm expecting he'll flip out when I offer that, but we'll see. Dealing with car salesman is always a pain.

Also the reason it could be on the rinky dink car dealers lot is he put the number on the xB that the dealer needed to get the new car deal done if it was a trade. I know a lot of dealers will put there number on it, but if a wholesaler will put a higher number, they will use his number to make the deal.

I think for the time being that I'm going to hold off -- I may want to purchase new, but I want to see the 2011 xB first.

I'm sure you could have done worse.

In my area, dealerships are asking about 15-16K for 2008 models and $16-17K for 2009 models. Not sure who would pay 16-17K for a 2009 when a new one costs 17400, but oh well.

I guess the idea is to start out asking an outrageous price to begin with, then spend 3-4 hours wearing you down.

Im also wondering why its not on a toyota lot as a certified pre-owned car. When i traded in my 05xB on my 10xB, they took it and certified it, and sold it.
