Default I want to keep TPMS on new (bigger) rims/tires...

Thinking of buying non-Scion/Toyota/TRD rims, but I want to continue to have the TPMS working on those tires as well. Do tire shops (like Les Schwab) typically offer to take the sensors out of the old tires and place them in the new ones? Or do they usually have you buy new sensors for the new tires?

My thought is that it would be nice to be able to simply change the rims/tires back to the old ones myself if the need arises, and not have to worry about paying someone else to mess with the sensors. I have no clue how the sensors are placed in the tires, and I definitely don't have tools/ability to fit and balance tires on rims.

umm les should take the old ones out. new one would be outragous. also the sencors are a dealer item not a tire item so les would have to swap them out.

How much can you expect to pay to transfer the sensors to new wheels??

Definitely you don't want to be buying new sensors, prices vary model to model & rim application, but you would be looking around $150 per sensor. Not to mention the dealer would have to print out the old sensor codes, them program the new ones into the TPWS ecm, probably an hour labor charge. Best bet is to have the tire place CAREFULLY remove & install the original sensors into the new rims. They are usually held on from the outside with a 12mm deep nut. The valve stem inside has a rubber seat that should seal ok for a couple of removals/installs.

Thanks for the replies - I just found out Les Schwab charges only $6 per wheel to transfer the sensors. Not bad. I might just live without the sensors when I go back to stock wheels, if that even happens.
