Default tire sizes for 20" rims?

i just bought a set of 20x8.5 and 20x10 +35mm rims for my scion. front tires need to be replaced, as they were on a lexus and slammed prior. threads showing on the inner edges. what size tire would fit best? im also looking to lowering the car to eliminate the gap. would a 2" drop cause rubbing? post your pics of some 20x8.5 and 20x10 rims! hell.. throw in some pics with the 5 axis kit so i can see what my car will eventually look like.. lol!

Those wheels with +35 offset will stick out past the fenders, and are completely wrong for your xB if you also want a big drop. Since they're 20's, there won't be enough sidewall to run a heavy stretch to try and tuck the tires.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you should either give up the idea of a nice big drop, or give up those wheels.

To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, look at mcdady099; he's on 2" drop Sprint springs with 20x8 +40 offset wheels and 235/30-20 tires:
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=237525

The set-up you have would equate to taking his out past the fenders another 1/2" on the fronts, and 1-1/4" on the rears. Rub a Dub Dub. Sorry man.

so its either wheels go on with no drop, or forget these wheels if i plan to drop.. would a mild (ex. eibach pro kit) drop still work with these wheels? also.. i still am unsure of a tire size to use. they seem to carry 245-35-20s all over the place, but im seeing reports of 225-35 or 235-35 tires as the mainstay. which to go for? thx!

Here’s a thread with 20x8.5 +40 offset wheels (all 4 corners), on TRD springs, with some really good pictures.
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=215946

He’s running 235/35 tires all around, and rubs sometimes while driving or if he turns the wheels lock-to-lock. You will see that he is flush with the front fenders, and sits back from the edge of the rear fenders about 1/2”. Your wheels would stick out about 1/4” more on the front, and 1” more on the rear.

I’ve never run stretched tires myself, so I don’t know if 20” wheels will allow enough sidewall height for a stretch to work. Even if it does, you might be putting the sidewalls in serious jeopardy for damage and tearing. With 20” wheels of the size & offset you have, I wouldn’t try anything more than the Eibach Pro-Kit drop (1”F/1.2”R) or the TRD drop (1”F/1.5”R). Unless somebody else can chime in that has a similar 20” set-up, the tires will be somewhat trial & error to see what will fit without rubbing. You’re probably looking at something like 215/30, 215/35, 225/30 or 225/35 on the fronts; and 245/30 or 255/30 on the rear. You really need a tire professional with expertise in stretching to let you know if these size tires can be safely mounted on your wheels. My first guess would be 225/30 fronts and 255/30 rears.

I wish I could be more helpful, but you’re really pushing it with those size wheels & +35 offset.

hey thx for the detailed explanation guys! so im planning to just mount them on my xB this weekend, just for a test run. i will take pics and post em, just to have a reference for others who wish to see this size and offset rim on our cars. worse case scenario, ill sell the rims and move onto something that fits a little better.

im still looking for some staggered rims in the rear, however. so for the fronts, my understanding is that 8" or 8.5" wide rims should have an offset of around +38mm to +40mm correct? now if i were to do 20x10 or even 20x9.5, should i be looking for the same offset? mind you i plan to lower the car just a bit to reduce wheel gap.

If you get new wheels, I'd look for 20x8 or 8.5 with +40 to +45 offset in the front, and 20x9 or 9.5 with +38 to +40 offset in the rear. 20x8 +45 and 20x9 +40 to +45 will allow the most lowering options without rubbing.

If you're pushing the envelope for fitment, then yes 5mm can really matter.

well i went ahead and purchased a set of tires for the fronts, 225/35/20 tires. put on the rears. CIONIDE, you were right about the wheels sticking out past the fenders. unfortunately, im a visual learner and seeing them on the car helped me understand exactly what you were talking about. ill post pics in the next few days so everyone can see what 20x8.5 and 20x10 +35mm offset wheels would look like on our cars.

on a side note.. anyone know where i can find fender flares for our cars? lol.
