Default How to help your cold air intake??

OK OK so I came up with this idea of how to get better cooling to your cold air intake if under the headlight. If i were to cut out some small openings in the plastic insert on the bumper do you think it would help my CAI? I have a fujita f5 CAI. I pulled off one of the covers of my computer case and it has a mesh design with some soft foam padding behind it. If i were to get some mesh like material and padding and place it behind the small holes on the insert, do you think this would be enough to keep the rain out? Or is this best to be left alone as the intake would suck up too much moisture/water and mess up your engine? Tell me what you guys think of this idea. I am not a car expert, just had a thought about how to possibly get a couple more HP out of your CAI. I would be using a dremmel to cut the small openings.

Yes but i dont want to just take it off. That would definitly let water in and not be good for something. What do you think of my idea about the holes/ padding behind it?

Use your dremel to cut the holes at an angle? Towards the ground? To keep water from directly hitting the filter? or I think aem makes a wrap for the filter to keep it from getting much water in it. Drysock or something like that.

Cut the plastic insert at an angle? I guess i could do that. Yea aem does make that but will it block some of the airflow for the intake? I could get the dry sock and just cut the holes and leave without padding behind but I like the idea of the padding to block out small rocks and road debris. Then i wouldnt have to get the dry sock.

that piece behind it is just part of the bumper. the angle of the pic makes it look like something is there but really its opened up. i have a billet grill coming in which replaces these anyway so itll be all opened up after those go on.

if you open it up too much with your fender wells still there it will catch all the rock/dirt in there. nothing major but it just makes removing it more of a dirty process lol.

Ok problem solved. What i did was i got my dremmel and cut an opening at the top of the insert. Then i got a fine mesh piece and cut it to fit the hole. As shown in the picture above, i had a couple extra computer insert things and cut that mesh to fit the size of the hole. I also used the foam like padding and cut and fit this behind the computer mesh. I hot glued the fine mesh then computer mesh and the foam padding to the back of the insert. Turned out great. I went for a ride and i could definitely tell i got more pickup from this. I strongly suggest doing this to anyone that has an intake that sits right below the headlight. It started raining a little bit and in some spots pretty hard. When i got home i checked the filter of my CAI and it wasn't too wet, just at the end the filter a little where the plastic piece is on the filter. Ill see how it does when it rains harder. I also felt the foam piece and it wasn't too wet either. I think this is what our cold air intakes need is a little airflow to help it out. Because think about it, where is the cold air intake getting airflow from besides under the car and through the grill? Ill post a picture of it tommorow.

I just spray painted them flat black to match the rest of the grill.Name: IMG_0196.jpg

I also had the air filter net thing on my injen intake, but took it off because it was holding moister. It got a little mold on the filter and the mesh. I have just ran without the net for a couple of years now. No problems.

Nateson how easy was this to install? And up here in STL we may not get as much snow/rain as you guys do.

It wasn't hard, and it was cheap and easy. I took off the bumper cover, push the old inserts out, the new ones required a little bending to coach into a perfect fit, then you drill 2 small holes in each corner of the hole, and zip tie it down. I can't see the zip ties and don't have a problem with them coming lose or coming off. The grills came unpainted, I just sprayed them flat black. The snow is a freak occurrence here in Chattanooga. 2 years ago we had the first white christmas in like 25 years.
